Origins of The Cult of the Spider People )O(

Greetings Darklings:
Today I want to blog about the upcoming publication of my spider-infested novella, The Cult of the Spider People. Twisted Dreams Press is republishing it this August. That is not far away! I am so happy. The cover is shown in the large photo above.
Today’s post will be about the inspiration behind the creepy story, why I wrote it. That’s an interesting story in itself.
It is hard to believe it has been about three years since the book was published. How time has flown. At that time, I was distraught. My boyfriend and I broke up, and the coven turned on me. Ouch. They sided with him. Double Ouch. I was miserable, and I missed the company of my coven.
Before we broke up, I had a portentous dream that he would leave me. In the dream, I saw him literally leave me at a bus terminal. I was so upset that morning, and when I walked into the kitchen and saw a broken glass sitting in the sink full of other unwashed dishes, I was like, what’s going on here? The broken glass he bought me was significant because it was the second sign from my spirit guides. The dream was a warning of a future event. Sure enough, he did. I was devastated. Breakups are bad enough without such portentous dreams thrown into the brew. When he did leave me, it happened at the bus terminal I saw in my portentous dream. Wow. My spirit guides warned me and wanted to protect me. I didn’t want to admit it. They may have thought they were helping me by warning me, but it only made me feel worse. I can’t blame them, though.
One night at home, not long after that experience, I received a flash of inspiration about a pagan cult of spider people. I found a blank journal and fiercely began writing. I didn’t know what I would write, I just went with it. I guess that if I had not met him and the coven, and endured that terrible heartbreak and found a way through it, I would not have written the story. I wrote the entire draft by hand. I left it alone, and then I returned to it. The first draft was a mess. I thought it would be impossible to edit it, but mercifully, I found a good friend, Stephanie Ellis. She helped me whip it into shape.
I also healed my heart. I may have healed my heart by writing the book. Now we are talking real heartbreak here, not just something that went away in a day or two, like a short-term flu. No, I was writing the story by hand in a blank journal that would soon be full of all my musings, with tears in my eyes. Writing can be cathartic. I purged my suffering heart of all that pain. I am not encouraging my dear readers to get their hearts broken in order to write a novel, but the heart is powerful, and that is a lot of passion to pour into a story. That is what you want to aim for, the passion, the why behind the what, that is what you do. Hold onto the passion and your enthusiasm for a story!
You need to be prepared when such inspiration strikes! Obey that fierce instinct. Give in to it. See where your pen takes you. You must be as original as possible in today’s publishing market. The blank journal that I wrote the original draft in contains drawings, research on spiders, the story, definitions of the parts of a spider’s body, pictures I found of spider people that resembled the spider people in my story and character sketches. I will save it forever.
I suppose that by creating the vicious, bloodthirsty spider people, I demonized the witch coven that betrayed me at the time. Well…. I don’t feel too bad about that. I do hang out with the nicer coven members now. I don’t care for my ex. But he was a huge part of the inspiration for my novella. I hate him, but I don’t regret writing the novella. I see him around at the coven gatherings, but I don’t talk to him.
That must be why I have such a hard time writing the sequel. I did not remain in that dark emotional/ mental space. I healed. It feels different now every time I sit down to work on the sequel. It doesn’t feel the same. I ask myself how I created such scary characters and Piper, the heroine of the book, but when I reflect on my past experience, I think I know. Inspiration comes from strange places.
My advice is to keep writing. When it feels good, when it hurts, and when you are so angry or in a bad space. You never have to show anyone. You don’t have to edit it to death – unless you want to. Use your emotions, your bloody, beating heart’s rants, and pour it onto the page. Throw salt over your shoulder, plant lavender by your front gate, and fall in love whenever you can! See where your passion takes you!
I am happy that Twisted Dreams Press will republish my novella in August. That is so close! I shall post more here about The Cult of the Spider People in future posts. Dare to return to spidery shivers and web-crawling terror! I love the world I created, the characters that live in that world and the whole story! I just can’t wait till August 3rd! I know that there are few publishing companies that are willing to republish a book, and that is another reason to be excited!
I am counting down the days until the release date. I am so excited. My other novel, The Mourning Tide, is slated to be released in October. One more amazing reason to celebrate Samhain!
Signed copies are available upon request. The copies are print copies, not ebooks. I can mail a copy to you, if you wish.
Blessings, Spiderwitch

Samhain Activities

Merry meet all,

October is flying by. Like it’s a witch’s broomstick racing against time. I have been so busy. I apologize for not posting more here. Now for the good news!

The book drive for the Edith Garland Dupré Library (University of Louisiana at Lafayette) was a smashing success! I am so proud to have participated in the book drive. I mailed them a copy of my novella The Cult of the Spider People. Jill Girardi from Kandisha Press had this to say about the book drive’s success:

“Hi Ladies! As you may have heard me going on about, the book drive we did for the Edith Garland Dupré Library (University of Louisiana at Lafayette) was a great success! Here are the first pics of the special Women in Horror book section created just for our books!

Libraries are one of the last strongholds for free speech in America, and every single one of you who contributed helped continue to uphold and fight for this right. Thanks to all of you who sent in books, offered to donate money, and helped in any way. Freedom to read and freedom to write! This is very important to everyone on the planet. We should all have the freedom to read what we choose.

Wicked Shadow Press has published my flash fiction story and many other stories by talented authors in a 3 volume anthology collection- Halloweenthology! This marks their third descent into the haunting heart of Halloween and they are proud to have come this far. I am proud to be pubished in those books!

Cover of Autumn Falls
the anthology my story is in

Samhain is almost here! I have a pumpkin and I stocked up on candles and incense for the big day on October 31st! I plan to have an ancestral supper. I am also atending two Halloween parties and a public Rit. I can’t wait! It will all be so much fun.
Stock up on cider and root veggies. I love sipping cider and enjoying a hearty beef stew during the autumn season. Cider and apples are full of Vitamin C, which we need in flu and cold season and the stew warms our hearts. Hot cider is good, too. Carve pumpkins and bob for apples with your friends!  Get candy for the trick or treaters and your favorite costume. Before you know it, it will be October 31 and you want to be ready for it, right? I do. I am sad that I do not live on Crown Drive anymore. I had bonfires in my backyard and no one noticed or cared. I miss having my own place. I can still have fun though. I plan to enjoy every single minute of Samhain. I hope you do too.
Collect autumn leaves, hold a bonfire, dress your altar for Samhain and have fun!
I had so much fabric left over from my halloween patchwork blanket project that I used the black fabric for an altar cloth. I just organized all my sewing patterns. It was a real mess to sort through. I had to iron all the pattern pieces (a mountain of them!). I sorted them with the pattern envelopes. I spread the envelopes over my floor. I sat on the floor and it took me a few hours to get it done, but I did. That is a good task to complete before the 31st. It’s good to start the Witches New Year on the right foot….
I know that my life was uprooted earlier this year. I moved from Crown Drive. I had a lot to deal with. However, everything has calmed down. Everything is sorted and all my belongings are all in my Mom’s basement and on the main floor. I did not want to move. I lost my garden. That was the hardest part. I faced a challenge and I learned a lot about myself. I hope that everything gets better. The one thing I did not want to face was thrown right at me, so to speak. I will miss my garden and the nature trail. I do not miss living there though. I don’t miss the ants and the mold. That place was one giant ant hill. I have to live with my Mom (ugh) because the rent is so expensive. That is a huge problem for most people everywhere. I don’t know when it will be affordable again.
I have to adjust to living with someone. My Mom is the ultimate conservative mundane person. I am enjoying Samhain somewhere else with someone who doesn’t get all hung up on that.
I wish you all a memorable and magickal Samhain
Blessed Be, Spiderwitch

Canadian Pride )O(

Merry meet all,

Dark and uncertain days are ahead of us. The tariffs are now imposed on the world thanks to the American presidency. I refuse to say his name in my blog post.  I do not hate the American citizens, I know it is because they voted a certain orange-haired lunatic in and now they are suffering the consequence of that action. The tariffs bring disaster and uncertainty with them. Now jobs are threatened and the auto industry and very likely other industries are threatened. This is unbelievable. He is in power for four years and that is enough time for him to ruin the world. That’s exactly what will happen.

Today the rain’s pouring hard on the grey streets of Halifax. The whole world has plummeted into uncertainty, now more than ever before. I am extremely glad to say I am Canadian. I have never been so proud to be Canadian as I am now. We are standing strong in response to the pointless and vapid tariffs the orange haired president inflicted upon us. I will never stop being proud. I will support Canadian businesses. I know we as a nation will always stand strong, defiant and united against these threats.

In other news Wicked Shadow Press published my flash fiction story, Cat Tales, in their anthology Who Let the Gods Out? My flash fiction story is in the anthology Cosmic Hunger. They had so many stories to publish that they created two anthologies at the same time. That is a lot of talent. I am proud and grateful to be included.

From the dusty depths of ancient myths to the shadowy edges of modern horror, “Who Let The Gods Out?!” is a double-volume anthology that unleashes the darkest gods ever imagined. Edited by the dynamic collectors of dark fiction Parth Sarathi Chakraborty and Rasiika Sen, this collection brings together haunting tales from both veteran authors and rising stars, each story a testament to the power—and peril—of divine intervention. Step into worlds where gods are not saviours but predators, where cosmic entities toy with mortal lives and where the line between worship and damnation blurs. Witness a mage bound to an alien entity, a woman haunted by a vampire god, and a man who bargains with ancient forces for love—only to lose everything. From the blood-soaked rituals of forgotten deities to the eldritch horrors lurking in the deep, these stories will grip you, terrify you and leave you questioning the very nature of divinity. AUTHORS FEATURED IN Who Let the Gods Out?!: COSMIC HUNGER Andrew Davison, Bill Diamond, Bissme S, Bob Moore, Chad Anctil, Chris W. McGuinness, Don Money, Donovan Thiesson, Dr. Jaswinder Challi, Eric Fritz, Heddy Johannesen, Irfaan Syyed, James Dorr, Jasiah Witkofsky, John R. Ancka, Kareem Miskel, Kay Groft III, Kaylee Petersen, Leah Sage, Lee Montgomery-Hughes, Linda M. Crate, Linda Sparks, Lucia Starkey, Lynne Phillips, Robb White, Samantha Esmond, Sarah Das Gupta, Sergio Palumbo AND William J. Connell Cover art: MythologyArt (Pixabay) “Who Let The Gods Out?!” is not just a collection of stories—it’s an invitation to confront the gods we fear, the gods we create, and the gods who were never meant to be awakened. Perfect for fans of Lovecraftian horror, dark fantasy, and mythological retellings, this anthology will leave you breathless, haunted, and utterly enthralled.

I can’t wait to read the anthology! I plan to buy a copy soon and the other anthology too. I signed up for a novella writing workshop Author’s Journey with Crystal Lake Publishing. This will guarantee I write the novella – the sequel to The Cult of the Spider People: Bone Chillers #1! I don’t want to lose my momentum. This will be a good thing. The course is expensive but I see the value. I haven’t done this type of thing before but I am sure that I will survive.

I wrote the Cult of the Spider People: Bone Chillers #1 by hand. I am not sure how I will get the story down. I could hand write it then transcribe it to the computer. I have deadlines to meet but I am sure I can handle it. I just have to write it. This will definitely be challenging!

I am proud that my novella The Cult of the Spider People: Bone Chillers #1 is now available at my local library. This librarian was a real bitch to me. She believed that no one would borrow my book. I will prove her wrong. She didn’t think I would even get my novella into circulation. Well she is now wrong. My book is entered into circulation. It shows up when I do a search on the library website. It makes me proud to see my book there! The novella is still being put into audiobook format. Wow I just checked with my publisher and the book is done being put in audio format! I am so excited.

I have more good news: Jill Girardi has interviewed me for her blog. I am very happy about that and I shall post the link here when it goes live! I never expected all this success but it does warm my heart!

I want to sew a Viking dress. I am just waiting for the green sewing fabric to arrive. I bought the fabric on Etsy and it is going to take a while. It hails from Latvia! That should be interesting. The pattern is a pdf which I have never done before. I figured out how the pattern is assembled. That was a real brain scratcher! I always find a way.

I have to buy milk today. I don’t want to go out in that maelstrom but I need to. I need a giant umbrella/ poncho thing to keep me dry. Or maybe a yacht or an ark.! I wish you all a magical weekend! Mercury goes direct in the next day or two. That’s good news!

A lot of horror novels and movies are saturating the media right now. We all know though that truth is stranger than fiction. We can close a book or turn off a Netflix movie if we don’t like it. The reality we all face in the next several years on this planet is the scariest horror of all.

Blessings, Spiderwitch

Book Launch Success )O(

Greetings darklings:

Today I want to post about my book launch. So grab a cup of coffee or tea and let’s dive right in!

I rehearsed the section I wanted to read aloud over and over. I found a video on YouTube that helped me to do a much better reading. The effort paid off. The weather was great. I do believe the gods wanted me to have the book launch because the temperature was so warm it felt like spring.

I wore my spider web lace dress with my black overdress, my spider web lace shawl and black lace gloves. I wore a pair of black boots, leggings and lots of jewelry, including a spider choker. I polished the spider choker the day before. I did my makeup really nice. I felt great. I arrived at the cafe with my man and my Mom. We found a table to sit at and enjoyed a coffee. I was so nervous. The cafe bustled with people.

Eventually the music was turned off. I arranged the copies of my book on the table. I also set up two spider figurines with the books. The owner of the cafe introduced me and gave the audience my bio. Then it was time for me to do the reading. Yes I totally broke out in a sweat and my face was several shades of fire engine red. But to my own shock, I did it! I even enjoyed it.

The audience was so quiet. That made me more nervous. I threw myself into it. It was over before I knew it. Then it was time for the question and answer period followed by the book signing. I answered their questions and signed books. I had hoped that more friends would show up for the launch. However my friends did come which made the night amazing. I felt so good answering their questions and signing the book copies for them. I felt like all that hard work paid off. If I got to this point, dear readers, then you can too. I wish I could have signed and sold more copies but that does not have to be the last launch for this book I do. I signed the six copies ahead of time that we left at Trident. I hope those sell too.

After that, I packed up my spiders and my spidery books. We all chatted with each other for a while and then left. I was treated to a nice dinner. I was so tired afterwards. A rushing train would not have woken me. I thoroughly enjoyed myself. I was so tired that I even got emotional.

That’s because……

I am so grateful for all the support I received from my online friends and my local friends, from everyone. The amount of support that I was shown has blown my mind. I could not have done it without that support. I never suspected and I do believe that I shall let them know how much I appreciate it. Wow. Thank you to everyone.

We dropped my Mom off at home. Then it was time for home and a more casual outfit. I barely even remember falling asleep. I was so tired after all the anticipation.

The book launch was a smashing success. I am blown away by all the kind support I received. I hope to host another book launch in the future and put myself through all that torture- kidding!, all over again.

Blessed Be, Spiderwitch

Upcoming Book Launch- The Cult of the Spider People!!! )O(

Greetings darklings:

I am so excited and nervous at the same time. Today’s post will focus on my upcoming book launch. This is my first book launch, which explains why I am nervous and excited. The launch is happening at Trident Cafe on February 25th. It is one week away!

I have promoted my novel The Cult of the Spider People: Bone Chillers #1. I have promoted it on social media. I remembered to include the relevant hashtags. I asked a friend of mine to create a video to use to promote the book. I created an event page on Eventbrite. I created an event page on Facebook for the book launch and I invited everyone that I knew and that I knew would be interested. I advertised the event at the library and online.

Here is the video for my novel! Enjoy

The one main thing I have to do is to practice reading my story aloud. I dread that part of the launch. I know the reading sells the book. I suck at reading my fiction aloud. Always have, always will. I shall persevere. I just have to practice. I want to make my own video on Youtube to help promote my novel before the book launch. I watched a few videos on Youtube for ways to improve reading a story aloud.

I know what I want to wear to the event, a hot dress from Killstar. But I do believe that mastering how to read my story aloud has to come before my outfit. I am so nervous because I hate reading aloud. I know I already said that but it is the truth.

I hope there is a big turnout of people at the launch. I have several copies to share. I would love to come home with few books that made everyone happy. That is the whole point: that everyone liked my book enough to keep a copy for themselves. That they want to tell everyone else about it. I just wish the book was available in bookstores. If the copies don’t sell and I certainly hope that they do, then I shall use those copies for consignment with my fave bookstore.

I also hope that the weather will cooperate. The last thing I want is to have no turnout of people because Mother Nature refused to cooperate. I hope the big storms are past us. I want lots of people to show up and that can only happen if the weather is cold but friendly. I know it is the middle of winter but I can’t reschedule this launch a third time!

Yes I want all the stars aligned, I want everything to go perfectly and I want the weather to cooperate. People would be warm and could enjoy a coffee once they are at the cafe. The weather is my biggest concern, aside from my nerves for reading aloud. I know I will be a nervous wreck.

I am excited too that my novel will soon be available in audio format! I hope the narrator does a good job of narrating my book. I wasn’t sure and so I passed on my concerns with the publisher. I am excited. This may boost sales!

In other news, I felt a creative spurt to fix up a few items. I painted a lampshade black using acrylic paints. Then I dried the paint using a hairdryer. The lamp shade looks much better. I also spray painted a basket outdoors. My hands were black. I had a hard time getting the spray paint off my hands. Next time I shall wear gloves. I just came in from refilling the bird feeder and turning my compost tumbler. I still turn the tumbler even in winter when everything is frozen. The compost has to be turned or it won’t decompose correctly. I want everything ready for my gardening and that includes the compost.

We are halfway between winter solstice and spring equinox. I do love the dark half of the year. I want to paint my dresser green. I bought these cool beautiful dresser drawer pulls. I bought a nice furniture wax and all the paint equipment I may need such as a paint tray, tinfoil to line the tray and make the cleanup easier, roller brushes, paint brushes and drop cloths. I’m waiting till March to paint the dresser. I will let Penny visit my Mom for a week. My cat Penny loves it there. I just want to avoid Penny getting green paint on her fur. Best if that is avoided! I can’t wait to see how it turns out. I know someone who has the special equipment to sand the dresser and thereby make my job much easier. I am so eager to get on with that project. I just don’t have any primer. But there is time for me to get a can of primer. I only need to have enough primer for the job. I do believe that the dresser will benefit from this care and attention and a new paint colour. It will look beautiful!

I shall keep you posted about my book launch! Till then, stay warm and stay safe.

Blessings, Spiderwitch )O(

October Musings

Merry meet all,

I’m sure you have all heard of how Hurricane Helene has left a path of total devastation in her wake in the States. My editor lives in the area where the hurricane hit. I was so worried if he and his family were okay. To my relief though they are okay and safe. I can’t say the same for the rest of the people living there. We get bad hurricanes here but they are not on the same scale of devastation as that. I have to wait and be patient and hope everything will be okay.

In other news, Wicked Shadow Press published my flash fiction story, The Grimm Pumpkin, in the Halloweenthology: Witches Brew which will be released this fall. Wicked Shadow Press also published my other flash fiction story, Serial Blade. Sirens Call Erin published the same flash fiction story, Serial Blade. I am not sure how I managed to have my story published twice but I did. I am proud that The Grimm Pumpkin is now published 5 times! Yes 5! Wow. Sirens Call Ezine is also publishing my poem, Encounter with Death which is its third reprint. I hope Flame Tree Press publishes my story Night Terrors. That would be awesome! I have the pdf of the Flash of the Dead: Halloween 24 anthology and it looks great!

I look forward to reading the stories in the anthologies. Reading stories by other authors helps me with my own writing. Dawn Wilson has offered to interview me about my writing. I look forward to that. I do look forward the most to the release of my novel, The Cult of the Spider People. I am not sure when that happens because the editors’ life has just been impacted by the hurricane. I hope it all goes well. I just love the cover art for my book shown above.

I also plan to make a few awesome Halloween treats at Samhain. I want to do my traditional ancestral supper, Samhain ritual, bonfire and of course, handing out candy to the trick or treaters! I may even finally make that concrete pumpkin.

I will soon begin sewing the Arwen gown. I bought these gorgeous trims and laces from Etsy. I can’t wait to get to work on it. The dress will be absolutely beautiful. I have to sew a scary doll for Onyx and a smaller doll for Thomas.

October is the most magical month of the year. I intend to enjoy every minute of it. I am amazed that my garden is holding up so far. I am still waiting to harvest my potatoes. I foraged yarrow and goldenrod. I’m going to make a tincture from the yarrow and soap with the goldenrod and calendula and a herbal oil with the St. John’s wort. I dried the nettle, lemon balm, mugwort and mint from my garden. I’m overwintering the holy basil and my rosemary. The pots are heated by the grow light.

I shall post more here about Samhain very soon. Stay spooky!

Blessings, Spiderwitch

Publication of my novella!!!! )O(

Merry meet all,

I am over the moon with the good news! Unveiling Nightmares is publishing my YA horror novella! I am so excited and happy about this. I never thought it would happen to me. It took a few days for the shock to wear off. I am stunned. I am so happy because the novella was so much work to edit.

I am luckier than most! I had help with edits on the novella. Stephanie Ellis helped me edit it and she breathed new life into the manuscript. She totally understood that I am neurodivergent and while I am not an amateur, I did have to seriously improve my writing in order for it to become publishable quality. I had to overcome bad writing habits but now I am more confident in my writing skills.

Also, another friend of mine Fred Raworth helped me with a few line edits. The initial draft of the manuscript looks nothing like the manuscript now. The manuscript and my other writing has received so many rejections and now it has been accepted! This is a dream come true and opens so many doors for me. They are already drafting up a book cover for me. That seems a bit fast but I can’t wait to see the book cover. I have been published before in anthologies, magazines and Ezines but this is my first book.

I don’t know if they will keep my title. I have a strong feeling they will. I am not a pro by any means at choosing a marketable title. I must say Cult of the Spider People is the best I have created this far.

Unveiling Nightmares is a new indie publisher! Here is the acceptance email I received from them.

Copied and pasted:

“Dear Heddy,

I hope you’re doing well. It is with great pleasure that I write to inform you that we have decided to accept your manuscript, “Cult of the Spider People,” for publication. Congratulations!

Your work impressed us with its compelling narrative, well-developed characters, and overall literary merit. We believe that your manuscript will captivate readers and make a valuable addition to our publishing list.

We are excited about the prospect of collaborating with you on the publication of your book. Our team is committed to supporting you every step of the way, from the editorial process to marketing and promotion.

Once again, congratulations on this significant achievement. We look forward to working together and bringing your manuscript to life. Thank you for choosing us as your publishing partner.

Crystal Baynam

Publisher
Unveiling Nightmares Ltd
Wow right? I read the email on the bus going home and I could hardly sit still! I was stunned! I was elated! All my hard work has finally paid off and all my suffering was not for nothing. I can’t wait to see the final book cover. They are going to make sure I fall in love with it! I could get used to this nice treatment!
I believe that the originality of my manuscript made it stand out from the thousands of other books out there. The underworld realm of Arachnall with its ferocious and horrifying race of human spider creatures sprang from my imagination. I am sure there are other similar stories out there but I did my very best to break out of the standard tropes in horror fiction. I am sure it also helped that I have a good track record as well.
I have joined the Facebook chat group for Unveiling Nightmares. The people there – the team of writers and staff all seem happy. That is a good sign. I have had success but I can honestly tell you, dear readers, that is was never handed to me on a silver platter- or silver pen! Ha! I earned it every step of the way. I will be happy to create a hopefully creepy and engaging horror story, a work of art, not just for publication but for readers to enjoy!
If this inspires you to pen your own work of horror or dark fantasy, and I sure hope that that is the case, then here is some advice!

Never give up! I was so discouraged before I received the acceptance email, I wanted to quit. I am so glad now that I ignored that nagging voice in my head. Quitters never win. You will never know if you can get ahead if you quit. You never get anywhere and the thousands of other hopefuls are quick to take your spot.

Keep improving at your craft. Even my writing needed improvement. So yes, learn about how to use adverbs and adjectives. Practice, practice, practice.

Be nice to everyone in the writing field. It is a small world. Word gets around and you want to be known as professional and nice.

Keep sending your writing out. Send your writing out to agents and editors but also the editors who want flash fiction and short stories.

Track where you send your writing. You can use spreadsheets or Google Docs or a word document. That way you won’t send the same story to an editor twice.

Learn everything you can about the publishing field. Get professional advice before signing a contract. Don’t rush into it. Don’t worry they won’t forget you. Don’t be afraid to ask questions.

Publishing is a business. Don’t ignore your gut feelings or intuition. Avoid publishing scams and editor scams like the plague. They pay YOU not the other way around.

Be original. I used to believe that editors didn’t want an original horror story. I have happily discovered that they DO! There are so many worn out horror tropes that desperately need new life breathed into them. It’s alive, alive! Yes do write a gut clenching, original horror story that is sure to keep readers up at night- all night cursing you because they can’t put your book down. Write the book that only YOU can write.

Support your fellow writers. I have not had a book published for many years. I still showed up to rally for my fellow authors. Besides, I get great books that way. Grab a coffee and attend local book launches. You can’t go it alone and  a community of fellow authors is invaluable. They know the publishing business, they know contacts and they will appreciate you.

If you follow all that advice, I am sure you will finally see that acceptance email or phone call! I wish you all the best, dear readers. I will keep blogging and keep you all posted on the process – editing, marketing of my novella!

Blessings, Spiderwitch

Preparations

Merry meet all,

Pumpkin season is here. The Paranormal Symposium is a few days away. I have been busy preparing for it. I can’t wait to attend.

The beautiful black plush blanket that I ordered from Killstar arrives tomorrow! I can’t wait for that either. The blanket has a spiderweb print and will keep me warm. I want to download lots of photos of my ancestors for Samhain. I also want to make them a beautiful offering of golden flowers this year. I decided on goldenrod and marigolds, and maybe asters. I am sure they will appreciate the offering.

The host of the Paranormal Symposium, Elliott Van Dusen, wants to interview me about my blog, The Paranormal Quill after the Symposium. I am happy about that. It is nice to get some recognition after all my hard work. I have had a long go of it. I will have to prepare for that too. It should be interesting.

I bought a cool black glossy nail polish the other day. The brand is Opi and the color is black onyx. I love the color and the quality of the nail polish. I am almost all set for the Paranormal Symposium. I just have to decide what to wear. I washed two gothy witchy dresses and they will be clean in time for the big day. I bought a beautiful black handbag today on Spring Garden near the Public Gardens. It is so lovely. I hand washed that too, as it had a strong scent. I want to use that bag the day of the event. Yes this has taken a lot of thought. I need spending money for lunch and maybe cabfare. It is a day long event so that is why I have been thinking everything through. The black boots I wanted to wear aren’t ready. I have an alternate pair. The clothes are clean. Yup I do believe I just have to enjoy myself and relax. I even asked my Mom to give me a wake up call early in the morning. I take the bus so I have to get up early early in the morning. I have to be ready by 8 am to leave or be there at the time. I know where the event is to be held and I know which bus to take. Now the old me would have scrambled at the last minute. This time I have prepared well in advance. Yeah being this organized sure feels better.

I even checked out hairstyle options. Maybe not that necessary but you never know. I mean we would seriously prepare for a job interview right? Right. I really want to make an impact with my appearance.

Penny will be groomed later in the month. I needed the money today to buy groceries and to pay for duties and taxes for the quilt to be shipped to me. I hate that but I had to do it. The blanket was 60% off. I wouldn’t have bought it otherwise, considering it is mailed from the States.

I harvested roses, yarrow, black horehound, asters, lavender, apples and red clover. I dried them save for the apples in my dehydrator. Now they are stored in jars. The herbs look beautiful even when dried. I ground up a large quantity of black pepper and I ground up a loaf of white bread. I stored the black pepper in the same jar and stored the bread crumbs in a ziplock bag in the freezer. I want to use up the food that I have because it is so expensive these days. Yup times are tough right now. I am not buying a new outfit for the big day. I intend to use what I already have. That is what the happiest people do. They make the most and best of what they have. I have nice things and I try to make them last me as long as I can.

I will have to get to know black horehound. I am not too acquainted with that herb but it is not that accepted amongst herbalists. One more herb to learn!

I am a student of life!

I made apple chutney last night. Mmmm. I’m continuing in my awesome herbalism course. I received my mystery box of witchy items from Etsy. In the box was a divination cloth to use with pendulum, a lovely tarot card (Truth), a small BOS, a beautiful pendulum, a pentacle, bay leaves, palo santo incense cones, a tiny bell, loose herbs, an essential oil bottle – tiny, a red tealight candle, rose quartz, red jasper, a leaf sticker, a sunstone, and a smudge feather. Beautiful and in time for Samhain!!

October Crafts

Merry meet all,

On this cool autumn morning, I took my big wreath and a can of black spray paint to the picnic table. I set the wreath down on the picnic table then painted it black using the spray can. It looks so cool now. I was careful to completely coat the wreath on both sides. Then I left the wreath to dry on my stone step and now it’s on the top of the bookcase. When it is fully dry in twenty-four hours, I will hot glue the black widow spiders, smaller spiders and the skull to the wreath. Note* I put a black plastic garbage bag under the wreath to avoid any stains or the wreath sticking to the bookcase.

It looks like this now:

I will post a photo when it is done. It will look really cool and spooky!

Tonight I plan to watch The Haunting of Bly Manor on Netflix. I do love a good ghost story! The wind is blowing hard here. That autumnal chill is in the air. The sky is grey and overcast. It’s October for sure. I plan to enjoy every minute of it. I don’t have to work too hard to decorate my home since it looks Samhain all year long in here.

Samhain has hit me – well, technically it’s still Mabon, with an urge to be truly creative. I saw down to do sewing today. The wreath, changing my room around, the corn doll, and the desire to paint my furniture black. My only problem with painting is how to keep my kitty from it. I plan to barricade my bedroom, set down the drop cloth and start painting. I plan to do that once I finish the cosplay costume. One thing at a time.

But today like the other time, something went wrong. That has been my week in a nutshell. The hot water was gone, this and that. Ugh anyway I hope the worst is over. So I will finish the costume once I buy more black thread. But doing one project at a time lets me focus on it more closely.

Once the black stand the bookcase are painted black and the paint has dried, I want to add Halloween stickers. The black color will make the stickers look more natural. The Halloween skull faces will hopefully look like they are emerging from the bookcase- black paint. I have spider stickers to add too. Again, I promise pictures when I am done.

I placed photos of my beloved late pets and of my grandfather on my altar today. I lit sage and a candle. I welcomed them to my space. It’s a tradition to acknowledge and honor those who have gone before us at this time. Here is a photo of my festive fall altar:

I love this time of year! I bought the skull hung above the altar at Spirit Halloween. I wish it was real!

Tell me about your aspirations, traditions or crafts you do now. That voodoo you do!

Stay spooky!
