Sympathetic Monsters

Greeting Darklings:

Horror has many well-known monsters that range from serial killers to brain eating zombies to Godzilla. Today’s post is about an overlooked type of monster: the sympathetic one. It’s my opinion that there ought to be more sympathetic monsters. I will tell you why I feel that way.

Most monsters in horror novels and movies fascinate us. I believe that the best monsters are sympathetic. Take the most famous one of all, Mary Shelley wrote Frankenstein. The mad scientist’s creature breaks our hearts and fills us with dread at the same time.

The monsters in my novella The Cult of the Spider People are NOT sympathetic but Piper is. She begins as a human being in the novella and by the end, she transforms with agonizing pain into an Arachnas. Piper yearns to be human, but she will never be human again. She does not wish to feed on blood to sustain her existence. She does not want to harm anyone, but she has no choice. The Arachnas were never in human form. They are eerie, blood drinking spider people.

The ghost in my novel The Mourning Tide bears a curse. He is forced to carry the seaweed that choked and was on his body when he was murdered, and he carries sadness everywhere with him. Jonathan, the ghost, accepts the painful fact that he may never be saved from his unbearable lonely existence and that his murderer who is alive and well may never be brought to justice. All that changes when Rosemary arrives and moves into his home. Jonathan was a mortal. He had a family that he loved. That was all taken from him.

Sympathetic monsters add a human element to their existence and form. A tragedy may have made a monster into what he or she or it is. It takes us by surprise when we least expect it. I remember when I lived in this one house with my family. We had a rodent problem, but one of those rats stands out in my mind. The rat did not bite or run or burrow. It just sat there with sadness, old and feeble. It wanted to die, to be released from a painful existence. So my older brother and my mother put the rat into a pot. They drove far away from our home, and released the rat. I think it died alone, but maybe with more dignity. Ending suffering is a humane thing to do. A rat is not a monster, but it does prove that we should not always be so eager to judge.

That breaks my heart. Most people fear rats. Rats are furtive and hide and their appearance give people the willies. But rats are misunderstood. They are extremely intelligent. Spiders are misunderstood yet they move into our homes to control the insect population. But people overlook the efforts of their web weaving allies and try to kill spiders with chemicals, for example. I never harm spiders. I know they are my allies and are allowed to weave their magnificent webs. Their appearance does make people uncomfortable. But they are an apex predator. They kill off many pest insects and we should be thanking them. We would all have a much bigger problem if it were not for the amazing efforts of spiders.

What may be a sympathetic monster to one person may not be seen in the same way by another person. A spider is not a monster, yet people fear them and will do anything to be rid of them. A rat is not a monster, yet people fear them. Bats make people uncomfortable, but they eat tons of mosquitoes. I have a great deal for spiders, rats and bats. They are treated like vermin, but they have done nothing wrong. Spiders. rats, bats and even seagulls, bluejays and crows are just being what they are. That is to me, the best type of monster. It is just being what it is.

A creature that can’t help what it is, that people find themselves relating to in one degree or another is better than something contrived. People like to live in their homes and live their day to day life without problems. They don’t want to see the dark side of nature- me included. I did not watch the movie about an android doll Megan or Annabelle or Chuckie. I can’t relate to those dolls. They seem to just be in a horror movie for the sake of the movie. But when I watched Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein that Robert DeNiro starred in as the creature, I bawled my heart out and I was terrifed at the same time. That stayed with me. I will never forget how the creature won my heart and broke it.

I am a Witch. I suppose in one sense I could be seen as Other, a rebel, a free spirit, a cauldron burning, moon worshipping Witch who dares to stand out from the norm. Does that mean I am a monster? I am seen as different. Well no I am technically not a monster, but I have seen parents cover their children’s eyes or cut ties with me permanently. I am viewed as Other, of not belonging to the normal – whatever normal really is – of society. I would not change what I am though for anyone. A crocodile is just a crocodile, but they hunt and they have to feed and mate. Tarantulas, spiders, monkeys, scorpions, vultures and black widow spiders make people uncomfortable. They are not monsters in the technical sense, but people are wary of them. They just are what they are.

The most dangerous and most inhumane monster on earth is Man. By that I mean, that it is man’s damage to the environment, to the entire earth that has caused many animal speicies to go extinct. Man has caused 60% of the animal life on earth to go extinct since 1970. That is a huge number. So who is the monster here really? A creature with scales, webbed feet or fangs? Or a creature that lives in a high rise with a car emitting dangerous toxins in the air or a man working for a company that is destroying the Amazon rainforest with no thought to the consequences of their actions? I ask you to reflect on this and ask yourselves… are we the monster? Owls live in trees that get chopped down to make way for a highway, trees that provide us with oxygen, bear fruit or house a family of squirrels. The oceans are polluted and there is no thought for the squids, fish, whales, dolphins or algae or sharks that live in them and have their own families.

The destruction of the earth is by no means sympathetic. It reflects greed, corruption, complete and utter destruction with no regard for the life that lived there. That is so unforgivable. When a being, human or not, is aware of its actions and has no empathy, that is dangerous. That is a monster. Mankind has caused corruption, climate change, greed, apathy, poverty, destruction of the earth, wars, famine, disasters. Not the seagulls, bats, rats, vultures, gargoyles or spiders. Nope. Because they wouldn’t. I hope we realize soon that we can’t take money to the grave. It means nothing when we are rotting in coffins. Money will mean nothing then. Those tall skyscrapers, fancy cars or massive yachts are just material possessions and objects. They are not reflective of the bigger picture in life.

Like I say, the best monsters are the sympathetic ones. The ones who terrify us or reflect our own fears back to us and yet win our hearts at the same time. I want to read a novel or watch a movie about that.

Blessings, Spiderwitch )O(

Conjuring Gothic Horrors

Why I Conjure Gothic Horrors

Greetings, Darklings:

Today’s post will focus on why I write, or conjure, gothic horrors. I have always loved the shadows, the dark places that maybe others want to overlook or pretend aren’t there. I call those shadows home.

I have always felt like I never fit in. I have always been treated like an outsider. It used to bug me, but I guess I was never meant to fit in. Now I embrace my weirdness. I am glad I didn’t fit in. What does that mean, anyway? In today’s chaotic world, we need more nonconformity than ever. I love horror and the macabre, the dark, shadowy places few would dare to tread.

Being a Witch was a big part of me embracing my weirdness. That may not work for other Witches, but it does for me. It is personal to me. I’ve taken that outsider feeling and created characters in my stories that are outsiders, too, in their own way. Normal is relative, anyway. It is also boring.

Monsters can be, well, monstrous. I created vicious and deadly spider people in my published novella, The Cult of the Spider People. They are terrifying because they act like spiders even though they appear part human. They never think like humans. They crave blood, they are a monstrous size, far more powerful, and it is impossible to reason with them. They exist in darkness, hunt in darkness, and rip you from the light into their darkness, into smelly, moldy cocoons.

Their cave has a massive web where people are trapped in cocoons, praying to be saved, trapped in a world that does not care. That is so Lovecraftian. They speak a different language, they never consider the consequences of their ungodly actions, and they follow the Spider King. They live for the blood. Bones and skulls litter the ground. Sticky spiderwebs snare an unwary human. There is no hope of escape.

Monsters can embody our darkest fears. They can reflect fears back to a person. A monster can be anything, from the tiniest, most harmless spider to a giant squid crushing a submarine in the deep, dark ocean depths. Okay, for me, being trapped in a submarine at the mercy of a giant squid would give me nightmares. How the hell do you escape? How do you escape Arachnall?

By contrast, I wrote a novel that has a monster with a very different story, The Mourning Tide. The novel features a monstrous ghost. The townspeople shun him and act like he doesn’t exist. He is forced to exist with an unbearable loneliness until Rosemary arrives in the town.

She moves into his house. She is grieving the loss of her husband, Henry. She is heartbroken and yearns to be alone to dwell in her own grief. The neighbors are not helpful at all when she asks questions about the ghost Jonathan. Jonathan knows the truth: he was murdered. Rosemary is put to the task of finding the murderer, bringing him to justice, and setting Jonathan free into the light.

He is very human under all that seaweed he bears. He is cursed to carry his grief with him.

So what truly makes a monster? It could depend on what you perceive a monster to be. That can be a strange alien with tentacles or King Kong. If you had never seen a whale before, would you consider it to be a monster? Is an alien like the Greys a monster? Is a monster an embodiment of your fears, like in The Babadook? The Thing? A rattlesnake?

It could be anything that is alien or unfamiliar to you, something so odd and strange you do not know what to think of it. But is there sometimes something more to them, something tragic and human under all those scales or tentacles? Maybe the best monsters are the most sympathetic, such as Frankenstein’s creature. I like to think so.

A monster in your stories should not be just a monster. It can represent something, be symbolic. Show us our deepest, darkest fears when we most want to look away. Some monsters embody a sinister darkness, terrifying and omnipotent, and some are monstrous and yet there is something intrinsically human about them.

Piper is human in the novella The Cult of the Spider People, but at the end of the book, she is a monster—and yet a sympathetic monster.

A thread of hope runs throughout the whole novella, even when Piper is transformed. She is a sympathetic monster because she yearns to be human again, but that is now impossible. She made a huge sacrifice.

To find out more, you can buy the book on Amazon when it is released again in October, at the beginning of the month. I also have signed copies available. I can help pay for shipping if anyone wants a signed copy! The new edition will be released in October. That’s only a few months away!

A thread of hope runs through The Mourning Tide, my other horror story that will be released on October 5, 2026. Yes, I have the wonderful fortune of having two of my horror novels released in October. One more reason to love Samhain!

The publisher is home from the hospital, but she has to rest. The publishing schedules were shifted. Nothing could happen until the publisher was home from the hospital. She has to rest. I wish her the best, and I hope you can all wish her the very best, too!

The thread of hope in The Mourning Tide is that we root for Rosemary and hope she succeeds in her quest to help Jonathan cross over into the light, finally finding peace.

Here we have two stories, with hope and monsters and heart.

I am now working on a new horror novel. I will enjoy discovering the voices of the characters, the theme, the plot, the setting, and, of course, the monsters, be they human or horned!

Blessed Be, Spiderwitch

August’s prequel to October

Merry meet all,

The rain’s pouring hard here. Last night, a few raccoons were cacophonously serenading the backyard. I have no idea what was going on but they caused a real ruckus. Nothing happened to my garden. I guess it is all good. The summer season has flown by. October is around the corner. I want my garden to grow faster and better. I know Mother Nature takes her time.

Yesterday A.F Stewart interviewed me for her show The Book Chat. I was thrilled to be interviewed. I shall post the link when it becomes available. I spoke about writing short fiction and poetry, and my horror novella. It felt good to be interviewed. A.F Stewart was so sweet.

The first Paranormal Symposium occurs in October, 2023. I bought my ticket months ago. I just can’t wait. I have posted the latest trailer for the symposium on my timeline. I just can’t wait and I am so excited. Here is the link: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/halifax-paranormal-symposium-2023-tickets-541022772677.  I may need to try on 60 different outfits for this and I have to figure out where the event is located before the event. I love the paranormal and well, I mean, look at this blog. Of course I love the paranormal. I will dive deeper into the paranormal since the dark half of the year is not that far away. Nothing is keeping me from attending the Paranormal Symposium.

I guess I love the paranormal so much. I feel a strong connection to it. I have a connection to the dead. I know I tackle some strong topics on this blog, but isn’t that what a blog is for? I have always had the ability to see the dead. Well I shouldn’t say always, I had to move to Nova Scotia to realize I had this ability but once I did, it just went from there. I was fortunate enough to find a supportive community of like minded individuals. I was trained in mediumship and I have certificates. I don’t always see or sense something but when I do, I am usually right. I have no idea why  I had to move to another province to find out I am mediumistic. It could be the energies of the city here, the fact that it is uber haunted, full of ghosts, history, tragedy, blood. That woke up a latent talent, I guess. Maybe the spirits chose me. Who knows? I will never have the reason and I have decided to accept it. Or, as Harry Potter says, just go with it. You don’t always get the answers you were after.

I believe it is vital to be a part of a community of like minded individuals when you delve into occultism, mediumship, etc. They can protect you, support you and teach you. I probably sound like Gandalf right now but he had a good point. Skeptics can be cruel or nice. But it is good to have a group of people to reach out to if you get a hard time. One hard lesson I have learned is to offer aid only to those who ask for it. Also, it is important to have an open mind. Not everyone who doesn’t believe in ghosts or aliens is trying to be mean. They could just be sharing their perspective. They are entitled to their opinions, no matter what it may be. I know, I go home and grumble about the skeptics too. They can’t help themselves. If you need to, stand up for yourself.

Training in mediumship allows you to have more control over your talents. That is a good thing. I would never turn down the opportunity for training. Your talents grow better with practice. It is like exercising a muscle. To keep it strong, you have to try. So. you can imagine my enthusiasm when I first learned about the Paranormal Symposium. That never happens here. Of course I bought my ticket early. I bet they will be sold out for tickets and that the room where it takes place will barely have standing room. I plan to arrive early to get my spot- front row!

August is almost over. August is the prequel to October and the dark half of the year. I love summer. I love being in my garden. My garden takes away my stress. Fall though is when I feel I can be myself more. The leaves trickle to the cold earth and the days grow darker. I look forward to the cold season and all the dark gifts it brings: the harvest, the colourful leaves, ghosts, the scent of autumn in the air. Pumpkins, Samhain, cider and apples!

Blessings, Spiderwitch

Never Summon what you can’t Banish

Merry meet all,

I watched The Conjuring 3 last night. Right from the beginning of the movie, the terror (at least for me) never let up. I mean wow the acting was amazing. I felt so bad for David Glatzel and Arnie Johnson. The possessions looked so real and believable. Wow what an amazing and terrifying movie.

Ed and Lorraine Warren are in the midst of an exorcism for David Glatzel. The poor kid contorts, growls and screams. The older boy who is somehow related to the family dares the demon to possess him instead to spare the younger boy. That is where the movie and the story- and trouble really start. What chilled me was how normal the possessed victims could seem at times, as if the demon was temporarily subdued. The lawyers all refuse to accept demonic possession as a reason for the murder Arnie commits on his landlord as a motive for murder. This was supposed to be the first case and first time that demonic possession was used as a reason for why Arnie killed his landlord.

“The Glatzel Family

The title of the movie comes directly from the nickname of the real Arne Johnson case – known as the “The Devil Made Me Do It” case.

The Glatzels were a real family who called in help from Ed and Lorraine Warren after 11-year-old David Glatzel began exhibiting increasingly strange behavior, claiming he saw visions of an old man who appeared as a beast, talking in otherworldly voices, and displaying scratches and bruises on his body. The Warrens diagnosed him as being possessed and several exorcisms were carried out, where the family claims David levitated.

The contortions David goes through in the movie are artistic license – though it’s worth noting they’re performed by a real person, a little girl, with Julian Hilliard’s face CG-ed on top.

At the end of the movie, during the credits, you can hear the real recording of what happened.

Ed’s Heart Attack

We could find nothing to suggest that Ed had a heart attack immediately following David Glatzel’s exorcism, although Ed would eventually die of a heart attack in 2006.

Arne Johnson

Arne was a real person and as in the movie, he was dating, and later married Debbie Glatzel, David’s sister. During one of David’s exorcisms, Johnson supposedly challenged one of the many demons allegedly possessing David and invited the demon to leave David and possess him instead. Following this incident Johnson apparently began to display odd behavior similar to David’s.

As in the movie, Debbie worked at a dog kennel and her employer was also her landlord. Unlike in the movie, where he’s called Bruce (played by Ronnie Gene Blevins), in real life his name was Alan Bono. On the day the murder was committed, Arne and Debbie were with Arne’s sister Wanda and Debbie’s 9-year-old cousin, Mary. They had been out for lunch with Bono who had been drinking. Later on an altercation took place where Bono grabbed Mary, and Arne ordered him to release her. Debbie apparently tried to deescalate the situation but Arne started growling like an animal then pulled out a knife and stabbed Bono to death. As in the movie, Debbie was a witness.

The Disciples of the Ram

The Disciples of the Ram aren’t real but they might be loosely inspired by real cults such as the Manson family –  this lot appeared first in the movie Annabellewhich is a fictionalized backstory of the doll (which is a real doll that was kept in the Warren’s artifact room).

Katie and Jessica

The murder of Katie by Jessica and Jessica’s apparent suicide afterward never happened, and the film doesn’t give a massive amount of backstory about these two. However, DC Comics has launched a new book titled DC Horror Presents: The Conjuring: The Lover #1, which specifically focuses on Jessica and how her possession comes about. It works as a direct prequel to the movie.

Kastner and the Occultist

Certainly no mention of these elements of The Conjuring:The Devil Made Me Do It were ever brought up in the real case. These parts of the film lean into the Satanic Panic of the 1980s, implying that David Glatzel was deliberately cursed by a devil worshipper looking to gain great power. It’s a fun bit of horror, which nods to other genre films and allows the Warrens to have an adventure with an actual antagonist rather than making the film a courtroom drama.

The Court Case

It is true that Johnson’s lawyer – a man named Martin Minnella – did try to present possession as a defense but the judge wouldn’t permit it. Instead Arne’s lawyers went for a self-defense plea. He got convicted of first degree man-slaughter, was sentenced to 10-20 years in prison and served five.

Michael Taylor

In the movie Ed Warren mentions to the lawyer that there had been a British case in the past where demonic possession had been considered a factor. The name Ed mentions is Michael Taylor. Taylor was part of a religious group in Ossett in the UK, who in 1974 began behaving weirdly. After a time, a decision was made that Taylor must be under the influence of a demonic presence and an exorcism was carried out. Vicars said he was possessed by 40 demons, and over an eight-hour exorcism they managed to rid him of most them, though they apparently didn’t manage to get those pesky last few – leaving those representing insanity, anger, and murder behind.

Sent home to rest before the exorcism would be completed, Taylor went to his house and brutally murdered his wife. Though details of the exorcism were discussed in court, Taylor was found not guilty by reason of insanity, and rather than arguing he was actually possessed, the defense placed a level of blame at the feet of the religious group.

Carl Glatzel Jr.

Not mentioned in the film is the fact that some years later, David and his older brother Carl filed a lawsuit against Lorraine Warren and writer Gerald Brittle who co-authored a book about the case, titled The Devil in Connecticut, after it was reprinted in 2006. Carl claimed that the possession was a hoax, that his brother was mentally ill, and that the Warrens had concocted the story for financial gain, convincing the Glatzels that it would make them wealthy and help get Debbie’s boyfriend out of jail.

Lorraine Warren and Brittle stood by their work, with Warren pointing out that six priests had agreed David was possessed. Debbie and Arne supported the Warrens’ version of events

The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It is out now in cinemas.

Rosie Fletcher

I enjoyed the movie The Conjuring 3: The Devil Made me Do it. I hope you all have a chance to watch the film too. I had to see it alone. That was not easy. I mean I wasn’t alone in the theatre. I just went to the movie alone. I wish I could have snuggled up next to my date – not that I have one. I would have felt tons better. The terror never lets up. I found parts of it even funny, like when Ed Warren transforms into a version of Jack Torrance, chasing Lorraine Warren down dark tunnel. Patrick Wilson is not only damn hot but a wicked actor who deserves an Oscar for his acting in this movie.

The Conjuring 3 had a new director. I think that more horror movies should be made by that director. He knows what he is doing. I am sure that the movie would have been far less terrifying if it was directed by Wan. Grab some popcorn, and see this movie. It will make you leave the lights on all night.

Haunted or not haunted?

Merry meet all,

I cleaned my broom closet this week. The closet desperately needed to be cleaned. I didn’t clean the closet floor in months. I thought I smelled something off, like a dead mouse. Turned out to not be the case. I removed everything- by that I mean, lots of cloth bags, the recycling bin, the 2 glass cloches, a lamp, tote bins, plastic boxes, a big heavy bookcase, a tall plastic stand with clear plastic drawers. I was quite tired after all that heavy lifting. I swept and mopped the floor then sorted through it all. I returned everything but the bookcase and the junk/ trash to the closet. Now I have more room and order. My Mom has the bookcase which I took to her apt today via cab. She also has the old laptop, keyboard, charger and mouse. My whole place is more organized and clean. I love it!! I emptied a tote bin of ancient belongings I don’t care about.

I believed for a long time that my closet was haunted. But I spoke with a guy I know after showing him a photo of my closet. He believes there is nothing nefarious down there. He thinks the broom closet just has trapped energy that is hemmed in and can’t move. I hung a pentacle and gemstones in a pouch down there. I used salt and sage in the closet. My EMF meter would glow too. It lit. up. Then I was forced to debunk my theory about the EMF meter when I realized that it lit up because of the power box, not spooks being the cause.

That said, a power box is not usually a reason for why I feel followed as I climb the steps up to the main floor. I show photos of my broom closet to mediums and psychics and they believe that there is something – a spirit, an earthbound ghost in the closet. Some people have gone far enough to tell me they think there is a demon down there. I don’t believe that. I am willing to believe there is a spirit but it is not demonic. Here’s why.

The energy is contained, hemmed in. A demon cannot be trapped. A demon will likely go anywhere it damn well pleases. The energy is contained and has been that way all the time I have lived there. If you think this through, it really makes no sense. Not all spirits or ghosts, forerunners etc are demons.  If you ever have a demon in your home, you would know it. They are like insects, they make themselves known. So I don’t believe it is a demon. My cat sits down there and she is calm. If you do have a demon,  your cat will hide under the bed and never come out, no matter how much you coax it. Animals are exceedingly attuned to energies and far more psychic than we are. So if she is calm, I am calm.

Some nights I see the spirit always in that one spot, practically staring back at me. Other times, it is not there and everything feels calm. Some people are quick to conclude it must be a demon. They never take the time to think it through. I just watched a little part of Ghost Adventures. This woman claimed that her home was haunted by a nasty – ok nasty-demon. She had moved to stay with a relative. Bad move there. The entity was then free to do as it willed. It didn’t sense a threat. She also took people in who had serious mental problems and had severe addictions. What a dumb woman. I am talking heroin addicts. Again, bad move. I mean she was dumb. My mother took boarders in but she screened them and made them give her glowing references. No heroin addict is going to have a clear record or give a glowing reference. Then she wonders why she has such serious issues. There was no demon, she just had serious issues. My mother would never have taken in a heroin addict. I wonder what that woman was thinking. It’s clear she wasn’t thinking. I have seen  a shadow person in my home but I think that something more serious was going on there.

I think they were wasting their time. But they are clearly as gullible as her. Most people want something to cry about. I can give an example here. These people for whatever reason- and don’t ever do this in your home- nailed ouija boards to the walls of the building. I would NEVER do that. Ever. This one tenant then claimed that a demon had infested itself to the building. However, when I entered to offer help to the guy, I did feel a nasty energy there. The very second I entered, I felt it. It hit me like a huge wave. So perhaps there was something in there. But I found his later claims hard to believe. I needed to see it to believe it. But then I am that way about everything. I am impatient and stubborn and not so gullible.

That woman I mentioned above would just be fair game for a bad entity. I felt bad about how she found her husband lying dead. Ouch. Entities can prey on a person feeling vulnerable. She was operating on a much lower vibration. Entities can sense that. It is a beacon to them. Oh yes they do pick up on that. It is like the glow from the lighthouse for ships that have to make port. That shines very bright to them and it is irresistible. If something did haunt her to wreak havoc in her life, it found her signal. I would taste bad to an entity because I know how to shield myself. She still deserves a hug.

I have studied psychic development and psychic shielding. I am a much harder target for a nasty entity to feed off of. I wish that woman had studied what I did and knew what I know. She would be much happier and if she used her brains, not let heroin addicts move in. I mean C’mon. That only leads to problems. I hope she works everything out in her life. Then her vibration will be higher.

Witchcraft is shrouded in mystery. We were and are persecuted. It is not what people think. People only see what they want to see, not the facts. That woman in the show is a perfect example. She saw what she wanted to see: oh my god my home is overrun by demons. Well maybe. Lots of bad stuff was happening which would draw them to her. But if Witches are so bad, which isn’t true, then why are we the ones who know how to psychically shield ourselves from such negativity? Again, the endless and needless persecution. If people used their brains and learned how to shield themselves, they would be faring much better in life- but Ghost Adventures would be out of work,. People need to believe they are being attacked to get to appear on the notorious show. Heck, the ghost hunters don’t even shield themselves. They let themselves get affected. Oh it’s proof. It seems sadistic to me.

But again, it comes back to the mystery. I believe- and this is just me, that everyone on earth is entitled to learn how to psychically shield themselves. Everyone. I wish it was more common knowledge. Then if there were nasty entities hanging around, the entities would find themselves faced with a challenge. Unfortunately, that is not the case. That’s sad. You don’t need to be a Witch to study psychic development. It would benefit people in many ways, some of which are mentioned in this post. I hope that more people do get the chance to study psychic development. It is a natural thing to do and it takes a bit of hard work, but the payoffs are amazing. It’s the difference between a friend handing you $5 or the lottery jackpot. Don’t you want the jackpot? I do. They would have to let go of their temptation to stigmatize psychic development and witchcraft. As if that would ever happen.

I don’t believe that my broom closet is haunted by a demon. It could be haunted or it more likely is just trapped energy. I did sprinkle holy water in it which did help. It has not harmed me so it is not that nefarious. Until something nasty happens, and I may be waiting a long time for that, I will just chill.

I am more qualified than most to conjure spirits. As I have demonstrated above, I am more practical and psychically trained. I have been trained in mediumship, psychic development and psychic shielding. I have done a lot of meditation work, trance work, visualization, etc. I would never nail an ouija board to my walls or use an ouija board in a warehouse at midnight for shits and giggles. I take it seriously. When you don’t respect it, that is when you have problems.

Blessings, Spiderwitch

Romancing the Dark Side- in defence of the “Dark Arts’.

cauldronsmoky

Merry meet all,

I explore graveyards. I worship my ancestors at my ancestors altar. I read dark fiction and hold a fascination with the paranormal. I love bats and cats and the moon. I own a ghosts and spirits tarot deck. I go where few dare to tread. Yet I see nothing wrong with writing horror. My mother doesn’t like it even though she supports what I do. She knows why I do what I do but she has her own opinions, which she is entitled to.

Most Wiccans, ok some, are the fluff bunny type. I’m going out on a wire here and dare to cross a line. I am all about honouring nature. I own a garden where I grow herbs and flowers. I am aware of the environmental issues and I do my part as best I can. There is only one planet Earth. We should take care of her or we will have nowhere to practice our craft. The moon is a poor replacement. Seriously.

I love to burn black candles, wear black nail polish and black clothes. I read the book Memento Mori yet couldn’t drum up the same enthusiasm from others and wondered why. I was called the Grim Reaper for wearing a black cloak- in my defence, I was cold! I like to include the darker gods and goddesses in my practice and my writings. I own skulls and don’t shy away from the darker herbs. Skulls don’t scare me. Crows have warned me of a death. I don’t hurt spiders and can’t fathom why some people sprinkle spider killing powders in their homes. They are the world’s best insect predators. Where would we be without them? I am one of the few grey or darker witches in Halifax.

But it all started when I found out about necromancy. I finally found my calling. I plan to perform the pact ritual where you basically sell your soul back to yourself. You reclaim your power. I just need to obtain a few ‘provisions’, such as a lancet, herbs, a skeleton key, a mirror, a skull. Once I have everything, I will be able to perform the ritual. I finally found something deeper- and darker, but I was searching for that ‘deeper something’ and found it. I think this truly hearkens back to the Witches of Olde.

If this is my calling, I don’t mind. I revel in it. I get odd looks when I walk out in public, cloaked. I am one of the few who do. I see it as something with substance. I mean honouring a flower is all good and well but not the same thing. Ancestor worship should be done all year not just on October 31st. So it comes as no shock to know I perform an ancestral supper on October 31st, on Samhain eve.

I just completed a 5-day Tarot plunge course. The course was offered online. I enjoyed the course and learned new things and was reminded of what I already knew. It was fun to do. I plan to finish my paranormal novel and send it off to editors. A friend is reading it right now. I might write a chapbook of horror themed poetry. I applied to attend the StokerCon festival hosted by the Horror Writers Association.

Black roses unfurl! Show us your glory! Let bats swoop through the nights and owls pursue mice. Black candles burn, their flickers whisper secrets to the moonlight. I may be alone in my deep plunge into this darkness but it is oh so satisfying, more than just plain old navel gazing. I keep a photo of my grandfather on my altar. I loved him in life and honour him in death. I am sure he watches over me. I want to learn all I can about it.

So to those who are like me, you’re not alone. Blessings to you!
