Monsters in the Modern World

Merry meet all,

Today’s post will be about monsters in the modern world. Or, rather, in our stories. We are all familiar with vampires, werewolves, and flesh-eating zombies. The most common tropes in horror movies and fiction have grown rather staid. Readers and audiences have seen everything under the pale blue moon. It is more important to reinvent horror tropes. In fact, it is not just necessary, it is absolutely vital. Creating your own monsters or breathing new life into the monsters that are too common today is the best way to get published.

I created a new monster for my novella Cult of the Spider People. One way to reinvent a horror trope is to take something very mundane and make it weird. I know many people are scared of spiders but I made spiders my own way for my novella. I gave the spider creatures- the smaller ones – human head on their shoulders. See how I did that? Then once the mortal characters are held captive in the realm of Arachnall, they encounter more spider creatures that are part human, part spider but they are one hundred percent my own creation.

Be original in your efforts and it will get noticed. We all know that Freddy Kreuger lurks in our nightmares and that other ominous serial killers lurk in shadowy alleys just waiting for an unwary prey. What if one of these monsters gave something instead of taking something away- what if someone was begging to die and was forced to be kept alive then they encounter one of those serial killers who grants them their wish? Or makes them omnipotent.

Another suggestion is the current state of the world. War, genocide and environmental degradation are rich with material to fill the pages of a novel. The idea of nature turning on us while frightening is not new but maybe you could find a way to put your own spin on it. There are reference books that can help you figure out how to reinvent the horror tropes.

One good book to refer to is The Horror Trope Thesaurus by Jennifer Hilt. Here is what Amazon had to say about this amazing book:

“Join me as we examine:

1). What is horror? What’s a trope? Some applicable definitions and examples. How to avoid stereotypes and cliches.
2). An extensive look at how the amnesia trope in horror.
3). Fifty plus trope entries with definitions and examples in current horror movies and series.
4). Practice using goal, motivation, and conflict in conjunction with tropes to create unique horror-centric characters. By analyzing tropes in various horror subgenres, you will learn how to identify tropes.

The horror genre is the study of our relationships with monsters. Personally, I can’t think of a better thing to study! Join me as we figure out what goes bump in the night.

From the USA Today Bestselling Author of The Trope Thesaurus comes a unique approach to crafting horror stories.

The Trope Thesaurus has over 200 Amazon reviews. Here is one sample review:

A Customer
Fuel for thought Jan 1, 2022
Forget everything you think you know about tropes. The author does a fantastic job of illustrating that not only do the obvious tropes exist in entertainment media, but if you dig deeper, you see a fast treasure trove of tropes bubbling beneath the surface.

She does a fantastic job of breaking down the bigger genres into their tropes, proving that, honestly, all genres share the same story beneath the trappings of the genre. It’s about characters and tropes and GMC.

With humor and a deft touch, she explains how to find tropes, twist them, wiggle them, jig them to work for you in a story, and, most importantly, that not all tropes are All Important. Many secondary tropes can do some heavy lifting, too, to create compelling stories that readers will lap up like sugar.

This book is going into my writer toolkit.” (Amazon.ca)

I am sure there are other reference books to use while brainstorming a new monster into your fiction. That book is just a start. It is hugely important to create your own tales that only you can tell. That is what makes your fiction stand out from the slush pile.

The character from the movie Jurassic Park said that creation was an act of sheer will. Let your act of creation be uniquely yours! You may just see your book selling on Amazon and keeping readers awake late at night.

Flash of the Undead Anthology

Merry meet all,

Today’s cold and rainy. It is hardly summer weather at all. However, on this bleak day, I still have cause for celebration. My flash fiction story, Undead, published by Wicked Shadow Press. The theme of the anthology is the undead. I love the cover of the book. My copy of the anthology arrived the other day. I read a few stories and they were so cleverly written!  I have read a few of the stories and they are not for the squeamish!

Another cool thing about this anthology is that some of the authors who are also published by Unveiling Nightmares appear in this anthology as well.

“Welcome to the macabre world of the zombies, vampires, mummies and more with “Flash of the UnDead”, an electrifying collection of horror flash fictions from Wicked Shadow Press. This anthology, meticulously curated by the dynamic compiler of dark tales, Parth Sarathi Chakraborty, features 70 flash horror stories that will haunt your dreams and make you do a double take the next time you see hunger on a fellow human’s face.
Prepare to savour the sinister horror of zombies, the seductive malice of vampires, and the ancient terror of mummies as each story plunges you into a realm where death is just the beginning. Encounter draugrs rising from their icy graves, experience Frankenstein-inspired nightmares, and witness the grotesque transformation of the human condition that blurs the line between the living and the undead.
With contributions from both seasoned masters of horror and rising stars, “Flash of the UnDead” offers a kaleidoscope of fear that will grip you from the first page to the last. Prepare yourself for a journey into darkness where every flicker of hope is but a fleeting illusion and survival is the ultimate horror.

Cult of the Spider People – Inspiration

Merry meet all,

Inspiration is a fickle muse. Sometimes she’s there for me, sometimes not. Today’s post will be about what inspired me to write Cult of the Spider People. There are several elements that inspired me to write it. Sometimes when I start a story, an image or two comes to my mind and my imagination. I feel the spark of creativity then and I sit down to write and my pen flies across the page as if on fire. I love those moments!

The other main element that inspired me or helped me write the creepy novella was my ex. I think this ties into the whole romanticized notion that suffering creates great art. But my ex certainly was enough to inspire a novel or a novella. He is darker than most people. I am convinced that my ex is the villain in my story. He stands out from most people. He has the ‘darkness’, long dark hair, an anemic appearance, sharp black nails, and he always dresses Goth. He is the epitome of a toxic narcissistic Satanist. He is thoroughly selfish. But when we dated for about 6 months, I was in love with him. The villain embodies a lot of the qualities that my ex possesses. He as the villain plays a large role in the book. He destroyed my heart which I did eventually heal from but if I hadn’t suffered through all that, then I would not have written the book.

The story took off in my head and I just wrote it. I didn’t write all of it right away. In fact, as the story was still unfolding in my imagination, I had to force myself to write the rest of it. I don’t know why I felt that way but I am glad I did obey my imagination. I wrote the rest of it and as I edited the story on my own and with the help of other people, I got to know the story and its many layers and depth.

I don’t know why I wrote about spiders. I guess it was just meant to be. I am a very brave person and so I find that to be a challenge as I write horror fiction. Certain things that would freak other people out barely fazes me. I think it’s personal. What scares one person may not terrify the other. It is hard to say. I created a story about spider people. The creepy things about the race of spider people is that they appear part human in their upper body but they don’t behave as a human would nor do they think like a human. They are one hundred percent arachnid like in their decisions they make, their behavior and actions and thoughts and their hunger for blood. I saw photos of some spider people art and the images reflected what I was trying to create on the page.

Spiders do make people uncomfortable but I like them. I like them a lot. They are quiet patient architects and catch a lot of other insects in their beautifully woven webs.

There are a few prominent themes in Cult of the Spider People. Addiction, body horror, love wins the day, good versus evil and light versus dark. I am fascinated by what I created. It’s just that I have no idea what sparked this book but if it is getting published, then I am not complaining. I just think it is all a combination of the above that helped me to create it.

I am so happy that Stephanie Ellis helped me edit the book. It helped me coax out the great elements of the book. It helped me to get to know my book more deeply than I would have had she never offered to help. I owe her a lot!

All of this has led me to where I am now. I am excited about the publication of my novella! I will keep posting about that here and I promise to keep you all updated as it goes from edits to layout to Amazon bestseller! Well I hope it becomes an Amazon bestseller. I will most certainly try to get it to that.

Inspiration can serve you wonderfully. It does not however erase all the hard work you have to put into your manuscript. The revision and editing are necessary beasts but it  is only ever intended to improve the story. It should never be taken personally. You have to edit it so well that the manuscript is clean by the time you submit it for publication, every I dotted and ever t crossed and I mean almost immaculate. They don’t want to do a lot of the work. They want you to do the work. But the more you do, the better your chances are at getting that contract.

I hope this inspires you to pen your own magnum opus.!

Blessings, Spiderwitch

Fairy Magic )O(

Merry meet all,

This weekend was so much fun. I attended the Once upon a fairy faire. I had a magical time and I will share photos.

I am now registered for the Herbal Academy upgraded Advanced course. I am sure it will be exciting – and a ton of work. The old version was enough to nearly drive me insane. I think the new version will just have a new level of insane. The bright side is I have lifetime access now and so I can study at my own pace. I can’t wait to get the textbooks as that will make studying much easier. I prefer to read in print rather than online.

I have been toiling in my garden. I planted the potatoes in two cloth grow bags. I also planted chard and kale seeds on top to deter any overly curious pests from my spuds. I filled a pot with soil and planted three chamomile seedlings in it. Three is the magic number! I planted purple basil, thyme, oregano, rosemary, sweet basil and arugula and a few other seedlings in the big box. I’m growing garlic, beans, and of course, haskap berries and raspberries. I am also growing squash and I hope to grow cabbage too. Everything is growing so well and so beautifully. I love being in my garden and it gives me such a sense of calm and peace.

The one main thing I want to focus on in terms of my garden and starting my herb business is having enough herbs for the herbal business. Right now, my garden doesn’t produce enough herbs to make my herb business a success. That will soon change. I have no intention of moving because then a huge supply of herbs I have access to would be gone. That means I would have to pay more to order herbs online. As it is now, I can access most of the herbs I need for free or for much less money. That works for me.

I have to research the herbs that I do have access to. I have to learn more about their actions, energetic and healing medicinal qualities. I have decided to make the patch behind the patch you see in the photo into an extended herb garden. That way I can grow more and then hopefully have enough herbs to run a herbal business. More lavender, mints, etc. I wanted to grow veggies but that has never been successful. The garden gets lots of shade and the root veggies never grow well. Herbs grow well in the garden. Well since the hurricane broke that tree branch, my garden has received far more sunlight. That has been a huge help. But I need to have enough to run a business. So that is my next big goal. I don’t know how much I need yet but I do need more herbs. So before I can plan to grow more herbs, I need to know how much I need. Then there is growing them and maintaining them in the garden including drying and preserving the herbs and processing them. Labeling, storing in jars, keeping them all in good quality. It will be a lot of work but fun!

I don’t have much of an update for the publication of my novella. I hope that changes soon. When I know more, you will know more.

I will close here and share some photos from the faire I attended. I wish you all a great week. Stay spooky!

My Garden in bloom 2024 )O(

Merry meet all,

Today’s post will focus on my garden. Everything is in bloom and budding and green. I love it. The ferns are already huge and beautiful. I bought several herb transplants but I haven’t planted them yet. I am still waiting for the frost to pass.

My bleeding heart plant is sporting lovely pink heart-shaped blossoms. My herbs are up – lemon balm, mints, mugwort, nettle, chives, raspberry leaves, and other plants such as lungwort, hostas, lily of the valley, lady’s mantle, astilbe, my witch hazel shrub and the lovely large sage plant I was gifted. The garlic is also growing quite nicely.

The birds are singing their hearts out. A bee pollinated my yellow haskap flowers and the lungwort flowers. The woodruff, dandelions, forget me nots and periwinkle are all greeting spring with their beautiful blossoms.

Every day the plants are bigger and prettier. I love being in my garden! I am happy now because the weather is now just warm enough, like it reminds me why I am alive. My garden reduces my stress. Gardening has always had that effect on people. It is really hard for me to be truly miserable if a gorgeous green garden beckons me. My cute cat too!

I planted beans and johnny jump ups. The other day I found violets. I want to return to that spot. I am debating with myself on whether I want to forage for dandelions. I am not bothering to forage for burdock root. Every burdock I see is already a 2 year plant and the roots are best when it is 1 year roots.

I want to harvest a lot of lily of the valley blossoms because I want to make a scented oil with them. I bet the scent will be heavenly. I plan to invest in a laminator and press flowers too. It is now flower season. I plan to forage and press a lot of flowers. I want to make and sell greeting cards with the pressed flowers! I couldn’t be happier.

In other news, I plan to transfer to the Herbal Academy revamped Advanced clinical herbalism course! The publisher and I will be soon doing edits on my novella and begin production after that. I am happy about that. My dream come true!

My author interview )O(

Merry meet all,

Today’s post focuses on an author interview I am part of. I hope you enjoy reading the interview.

Interview With Author Heddy Johannesen

Q: If you could have a fantasy pet, what would you have and why?
A: A black shiny raven that talks. I already have a cat. The raven would be my eyes and ears
to the world, and report back to me!

Q: What type of music best describes your writing?
A: I listen to scary music to get into the mindset. When I wrote Cult of the Spider People,
listening to the Alien soundtrack helped me write the dark morbid parts of the story. I
also listen to Heilung, Viking music which is a part of my ancestry.

Q: Tell us about your writing office/space and why it’s special to you.
A: My writing space is in my small bedroom in my small apartment. Cozy, well lit, with tons of
books and files, writing supplies, cat hair. I feel like I can be my most creative self in my
little nook. It’s special because it is full of cool knickknacks like I just went shopping at
Hogwarts. It feels comfortable. I brought nature indoors. Leaves, vines, flowers, crystal balls,
candles, cauldrons.

Q: What is your favorite piece of visual art that has inspired a story or two?
A: I like skull art. I really like skulls. I have skulls on dishes, journals, jewelry. I think they
are like a representation of someone’s life, used to be in a shell of a living human body.
Skulls are beautiful and yet dark, because they are a part of death and yet if clean, intact,
like they go on after death.

Q: If you didn’t write full-time what would your day job be? Is writing a hobby for you?
A: I love to write. I love to read. I am studying to be a professional herbalist. I would be
holed up drinking coffee, poring over ancient herbals and making tinctures and syrups.
Writing is not a hobby. I love to write but I have to find a way to support myself so I can
write.

Q: What is your writing schedule and how many words do you write in a sitting?
A: I write on my blog. I write about a few thousand words in a sitting. It depends on the
project. I like to write flash fiction, stories. I am also writing a ghost nonfiction book.

Q: How do you celebrate publishing a new story?
A: I pet my cat, maybe have some wine, treat myself to something nice.

Q: How do you balance your outside life with your writing life?
A: I try to blend both. I love to visit cemeteries. I take photos in cemeteries for the HWA
newsletter. I do find it challenging sometimes to work on my horror writing and my
herbalism course studies. But I do the best I can. Cemeteries inspire me too. Sometimes I
write there in a cemetery.

Q: Write your eulogy in three sentences.
A: Here lies a dead poet. Her horror stories live on beyond the grave. She wished to be buried
with her books and pens to pen more morbid novels and short stories in her coffin.

Q: What project are you most proud of completing?
A: I believe that I am most proud of completing Cult of the Spider People. It was not like
any story I have ever written before. It was extremely challenging. I grew as a writer. I
will not ever be the same. It brought me out of my comfort zone. I learned so much, had
to improve my writing, realize when a manuscript is and is not ready to be submitted and
overcome a nasty scam editor. Everything was thrown at me but I am happy that I sailed
past those conflicts. I am proud that my short story, The Grimm Pumpkin, was published
four times. I completed a small book of poetry and I am happy about my novella, Cult of
the Spider People.

Q: Do you have any projects you would like to tell your readers about?
A: I have had a few flash fiction stories published in anthologies by Wicked Shadow Press. I
have a few pieces published in the Horror Zine.

Q: Who is your favorite character from any of your stories and why? If you had to choose a
popular author to continue writing this character in another book who would you choose
and why?
A: I would say that Piper Marshall, the main character from Cult of the Spider People is a
character I would continue to write in another book. She is not like me at all. She is great
but impatient and stubborn and young and brave. She was a lot of fun to write. She loves
and cares about those closest to her. She would make a huge sacrifice for someone she
cares about and goes through all these dangerous experiences in the novella.

Q: Where can your readers find you on social media?
A: I am on Facebook and Twitter. My cat is on Instagram at #pennygingercat. I can be found on
Twitter at magicka66, on Facebook where I have a page – the Paranormal Quill. I also
have a blog titled The Paranormal Quill.

Bio: My fiction has appeared in The Horror Zine, Yule Cat Codex, Halloweenthology: Trick or Treat, Polar Borealis, Wax and Wane: A Gathering of Witchy Tales, Ghosts, Spirits and Spectres Volume 2, Handbook of the Dead, Samhain Secrets, One Night in Salem, Feminine Macabre, Paranormal Chronicles and Untimely Frost: Poetry Unthawed. I’m a member of the Horror Writers Association and co-chair of the Horror Writers Association chapter for Atlantic Canada. I’ve attended the virtual Horror Writers Association Annual Convention StokerCon, in 2021, 2022 and 2023. I participated in the online From Idea to Finished First Draft Masterclass with Jonathan Maberry in June 2023, the Three Prime Rules of Writing Horror Webinar with Mort Castle in October 2020 and a mentorship with Tim Waggoner. I graduated from a Copy-Editing Certification Training at Writer’s Digest in July 2020 and a Bachelor of Arts degree. I’m a writer with a fascination for the paranormal.

The Dos and Don’ts of Haunted Objects

Merry meet all,

I am so honoured to discover that my blog is included on the website 100 Best Paranormal Blogs and Websites! Wow! I am honoured. I mean this is awesome. Truly awesome.

Today the sun’s shining hard but the cold wind lingers. That ruins my groove because I can’t wear certain tops, unless I have the equivalent of an eskimo parka on over it. Not sure why this cold wind is still here but I hope it leaves soon.

Today’s post is about how to deal with a haunted object. Enjoy!

The Dos and Don’ts of Dealing with a Haunted Object

Many people believe that objects can become Haunted. Whether you believe it or not, there are certain steps you should take if you think you have a Haunted object in your possession. In this blog post, we will go over what to do if you think an object is Haunted as well as how to remove a spirit from an object.

How Can a Spirit Become Attached to an Object?
There are two main ways that a spirit can become attached to an object: through attraction or through energy. The first instance is when the spirit is attracted to the object itself. This could be because of the material it is made out of, its color, or even its shape. The second instance is when the spirit becomes attached to the energy of the person who owns the object. This often happens with items that have been passed down through generations or have been owned by someone for a long time. The attachment can also happen if the owner was very emotional when they were using the item.

For example, if a person got very angry while using a particular tool, that tool could pick up on that anger and attract a spirit that is also angry. Or, if someone passed away while wearing a certain piece of jewelry, that jewelry could hold on to the energy of the person and their passing. There are many different circumstances in which a spirit can become attached to an object.

Can Objects Be Haunted?
The answer to this question is a little bit complicated. Technically speaking, no, an inanimate object cannot be haunted because it does not have a soul. However, what many people think of as “haunted” objects are actually just objects that have had a spirit attached to them at some point in time. So while an object cannot be haunted in and of itself, it can have all of the same symptoms as a haunted house would—things moving on their own, strange noises, etc.—because there is a spirit present.

Dos:

• If you think an object is Haunted, the first thing you should do is try to figure out why the spirit is attached to the object. This can be done by researching the history of the object or talking to a medium.

• Once you know why the spirit is attached to the object, you can try to help them move on. This can be done by holding a seance or by performing a cleansing ritual. • If you are successful in helping the spirit move on, be sure to bless the object so that it does not become Haunted again.

Don’ts:

• Do not attempt to remove a spirit from an object without knowing why they are attached to it. This can agitate the spirit and make them angry.

• Do not try to communicate with the spirit without the help of a professional medium. This can be dangerous as spirits can lash out if they feel threatened.

• Do not attempt to perform a cleansing ritual without first doing your research. Cleansing rituals can be dangerous if not performed correctly.

If you think you have a Haunted object in your possession, there are certain steps you should take. Do your research and try to figure out why the spirit is attached to the object. Once you know why they are attached, you can try to help them move on. If you are successful, be sure to blessed the object so that it does not become Haunted again. If you have any further questions or concerns, please consult with a professional medium.

Publication of my novella!!!! )O(

Merry meet all,

I am over the moon with the good news! Unveiling Nightmares is publishing my YA horror novella! I am so excited and happy about this. I never thought it would happen to me. It took a few days for the shock to wear off. I am stunned. I am so happy because the novella was so much work to edit.

I am luckier than most! I had help with edits on the novella. Stephanie Ellis helped me edit it and she breathed new life into the manuscript. She totally understood that I am neurodivergent and while I am not an amateur, I did have to seriously improve my writing in order for it to become publishable quality. I had to overcome bad writing habits but now I am more confident in my writing skills.

Also, another friend of mine Fred Raworth helped me with a few line edits. The initial draft of the manuscript looks nothing like the manuscript now. The manuscript and my other writing has received so many rejections and now it has been accepted! This is a dream come true and opens so many doors for me. They are already drafting up a book cover for me. That seems a bit fast but I can’t wait to see the book cover. I have been published before in anthologies, magazines and Ezines but this is my first book.

I don’t know if they will keep my title. I have a strong feeling they will. I am not a pro by any means at choosing a marketable title. I must say Cult of the Spider People is the best I have created this far.

Unveiling Nightmares is a new indie publisher! Here is the acceptance email I received from them.

Copied and pasted:

“Dear Heddy,

I hope you’re doing well. It is with great pleasure that I write to inform you that we have decided to accept your manuscript, “Cult of the Spider People,” for publication. Congratulations!

Your work impressed us with its compelling narrative, well-developed characters, and overall literary merit. We believe that your manuscript will captivate readers and make a valuable addition to our publishing list.

We are excited about the prospect of collaborating with you on the publication of your book. Our team is committed to supporting you every step of the way, from the editorial process to marketing and promotion.

Once again, congratulations on this significant achievement. We look forward to working together and bringing your manuscript to life. Thank you for choosing us as your publishing partner.

Crystal Baynam

Publisher
Unveiling Nightmares Ltd
Wow right? I read the email on the bus going home and I could hardly sit still! I was stunned! I was elated! All my hard work has finally paid off and all my suffering was not for nothing. I can’t wait to see the final book cover. They are going to make sure I fall in love with it! I could get used to this nice treatment!
I believe that the originality of my manuscript made it stand out from the thousands of other books out there. The underworld realm of Arachnall with its ferocious and horrifying race of human spider creatures sprang from my imagination. I am sure there are other similar stories out there but I did my very best to break out of the standard tropes in horror fiction. I am sure it also helped that I have a good track record as well.
I have joined the Facebook chat group for Unveiling Nightmares. The people there – the team of writers and staff all seem happy. That is a good sign. I have had success but I can honestly tell you, dear readers, that is was never handed to me on a silver platter- or silver pen! Ha! I earned it every step of the way. I will be happy to create a hopefully creepy and engaging horror story, a work of art, not just for publication but for readers to enjoy!
If this inspires you to pen your own work of horror or dark fantasy, and I sure hope that that is the case, then here is some advice!

Never give up! I was so discouraged before I received the acceptance email, I wanted to quit. I am so glad now that I ignored that nagging voice in my head. Quitters never win. You will never know if you can get ahead if you quit. You never get anywhere and the thousands of other hopefuls are quick to take your spot.

Keep improving at your craft. Even my writing needed improvement. So yes, learn about how to use adverbs and adjectives. Practice, practice, practice.

Be nice to everyone in the writing field. It is a small world. Word gets around and you want to be known as professional and nice.

Keep sending your writing out. Send your writing out to agents and editors but also the editors who want flash fiction and short stories.

Track where you send your writing. You can use spreadsheets or Google Docs or a word document. That way you won’t send the same story to an editor twice.

Learn everything you can about the publishing field. Get professional advice before signing a contract. Don’t rush into it. Don’t worry they won’t forget you. Don’t be afraid to ask questions.

Publishing is a business. Don’t ignore your gut feelings or intuition. Avoid publishing scams and editor scams like the plague. They pay YOU not the other way around.

Be original. I used to believe that editors didn’t want an original horror story. I have happily discovered that they DO! There are so many worn out horror tropes that desperately need new life breathed into them. It’s alive, alive! Yes do write a gut clenching, original horror story that is sure to keep readers up at night- all night cursing you because they can’t put your book down. Write the book that only YOU can write.

Support your fellow writers. I have not had a book published for many years. I still showed up to rally for my fellow authors. Besides, I get great books that way. Grab a coffee and attend local book launches. You can’t go it alone and  a community of fellow authors is invaluable. They know the publishing business, they know contacts and they will appreciate you.

If you follow all that advice, I am sure you will finally see that acceptance email or phone call! I wish you all the best, dear readers. I will keep blogging and keep you all posted on the process – editing, marketing of my novella!

Blessings, Spiderwitch

Beltane

Merry meet all,

I know it’s a while since I’ve posted. However, I have been under the weather. I had to take time to recover. I am still in recovery but now I’m up and about. While I recovered, Penny and I stayed with my Mom. The bathroom is so lovely now that it’s painted and the toilet is fixed! I love it!

Beltane is here! Are you all excited? I am. However, a cold wind lingers this spring. I still have to bundle up and be warm. My starter plants are at my Mom’s. When I stayed there, I brought them over with me. I want to nurture my plants here but Penny munches on them. Once it is warm enough for the plants to go out, I will bring them back. For now, the plants are thriving there under her care.

I have to lay down new soil on the garden. I am so eager to do so but it is not time yet. It’s almost time. My garden needs a real clean up but I have to wait till we get warmer temperatures! Yes the waiting kills me. I know that insects are nesting in the garden yet and that the frost has still not left. Removing the protective layers of straw and the autumn leaves now means risking damage to the plants and what has nested there all winter. Yes I must wait.

I bought a cool new book. It’s Frankenstein by Mary Shelley but it is in a new print format. I shall have a good time reading that! The book is hardcover, with 25 illustrations, distinctive gilded page edges, a ribbon marker, the collectible hardcover volume makes the book standout on the shelf.

This link will tell you more about it: https://www.amazon.ca/dp/1454951575?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details This one-of-a-kind deluxe edition hardcover edition is an exquisite work of art. It features an alluring, transparent acetate jacket to highlight Coulthart’s art printed on the hardcover case, color-printed sprayed edges, and intricate two-color artwork throughout. Wow! The book is beautiful. I will enjoy reading it.

I am so happy spring is here! I have missed working in my garden. Now if the frost and cold wind would just go away! Enjoy Beltane!

Blessings, Spiderwitch

Spring Clean )O(

Finished Paint Job

Merry meet all,

Today’s post is  about how I was inspired to spring clean in the biggest way. This weekend I completed a BIG project. I have wanted to paint the bathroom for the longest time. Now I finally did it.

The bathroom was such an eyesore. The bathroom desperately needed it. I am not talking about a deep cleaning, no, I mean a paint job to enhance and upscale the bathroom. That meant it would take some serious elbow grease. But I was up to the task.

I did clean the bathroom first. I removed the hooks, photos, seashells, litter box, curtains, shelving stands etc., everything that needed to be moved. I scrubbed every inch of the bathroom. Like seriously clean. I had to in order for the paint job to work. Then I gathered up my painting supplies – paint tray, roller brushes, a paintbrush, cans of paint, cleaning rags, everything I would need. My cat Penny stayed with my Mom for the duration of the project.

I began with a coat of white primer. I got the primer paint into every nook and cranny and all over the walls. I even almost painted the ceiling. Once I had finished the coat of primer, I stood back and surveyed the bathroom. It almost totally looked better. That night I painted more primer on the baseboards, wainscoting and trim. I also patched holes with the caulking. I tried to seal as many holes and cracks as I could with the caulking glue. It looked so much better. I was exhausted that night.

The next day I drank some coffee and got to work on the first paint job with the beige paint. I edged the mirror frames and the towel holders with green painters tape. I love love painters tape. I made sure the walls were clean and painted the walls beige. It was so much work. I used a roller brush for the first time and I love roller brushes. I only had the basic necessities in the bathroom – toilet paper, a face cloth which ended up being used to get paint or caulking off my hands. I wore a casual outfit I would not want to be seen in but that I would not mind if paint got on it which did happen. Yes the drop cloth was useless. I put newspaper down on the floor.

Also during this time, I damaged something in the toilet tank. I had to find a quick way to fix it. I knew my landlord would never fix it. He turned off the heat again and my Mom emailed him. Soon after, the heat was restored.

It is late spring here, mid- April but it is still cold. I was so sore and exhausted by the time I was done. I also could not have showers in the bathroom so my aching muscles ached more. My bedroom was full of the stuff that was usually stored in the bathroom. I felt a bit like I was camping out in my own apartment. But it was slowly coming together.

I visited my Mom to see my cat. She missed me and while my cat stayed with her, Penny hissed at my Mom 5 times. I think that was Penny’s way of saying she missed me. But the bathroom went from bland to beautiful in a short amount of time. That night I went home and made more small touches to the bathroom. I painted the hooks at the bathroom window white. I left the nail in the wall for the painting. That made it easier that once the paint was dry (the 2nd coat) I could just hang the painting. I know it was hard work but the satisfaction I derived from seeing the bathroom come to life made it worth it. On the day of the second and final coat of paint, I was really tired. I really needed to get clean and see my cat.

Still, I didn’t leave the bathroom until I was sure I was done. My roller brush called it quits much to my dismay. The larger roller brush was totally cursed or something because it refused to work for me. I had to do the last stretch of painting using the paint brush. Once I was finally all done, I noticed the beige paint coated the ceiling a few inches out all along the ceiling. I used the white primer paint to touch up the ceiling edges and make it look neat and clean. By this time, I was thoroughly exhausted and sweaty. I was able to have a hot soak at my Mom’s and shortly after a hot meal, Penny and I returned home. I worried she would get her claws on the walls or that the walls would be covered in her fur in no time at all. But no, it’s all ok. I stood in the bathroom and marvelled at the amazing change.

I let the paint to dry and settle for 24 hours then I returned the furniture to the bathroom: the litter box (which I kept in the bathtub) and the two stands. At first, I kept it all away from the wall. Now that the paint has dried more, I added the laundry hamper next to the glass and stainless steel stand. I hung up the shower curtain, returned the blue rug, cleaned up the exterior of the litter box. I folded the now clean blue curtain in half and laid it out on an ironing board. I laid it all down nice and neat and flat. I pinned the lower fabric to the top half of the curtain and hung it up in the bathroom.

I find myself looking for excuses just to be in the bathroom. I just stand and stare at how much more beautiful it turned out. It stuns me. I believe the beige/ taupe/coffee color totally enhances the bathroom and makes it look fresh and almost ethereal. I thought my black shower curtain would appear out of place but that’s not the case. I cleaned up the now defunct roller brushes, drop cloth, painter tape, newspapers, and whatever else was trash into a black garbage bag and took it to the dumpster. I found a new toothbrush and stocked up on toilet paper.

I guess the cold white paint of the windowframe is ok. I hung up my bathrobe on the hook and sorted the medicine cabinet closet. I got rid of the garbage and cleaned the vanity below- a little cupboard space. I made everything fresh and clean. I love how the bathroom paint renovation turned out. It’s so beautiful. I took a bath this morning. I swept the floor, cleaned the sink and mirror, and mopped the floor again.

I hope today’s post inspires you to try refreshing your own home this spring! Upscale! Clean! Upgrade. It’s your home and your life and you deserve it.

Blessings, Spiderwitch
