Autumn Decorations

Merry meet all,

My favorite time of year is almost here! Autumn is a time of harvesting and the magic of Halloween. It’s hard to believe Halloween is 2 months away.

Now is the time to plant garlic to harvest next late summer. It’s so easy. It’s better to plant organic garlic cloves than nonorganic. Organic cloves don’t have the germination inhibitors sprayed on them. Plant the cloves with the tip pointing up a few inches from each other. Cover with soil and water lightly. Next year, you can harvest fresh garlic. The garlic you grow in your garden tastes way better than the store bought garlic.

Summer is the ideal season to enjoy corn. Why not make a corn doll to add to your autumnal celebrations for the season? This link tells you how to make one. Feel free to be as creative as you wish. https://feltmagnet.com/crafts/How-to-Make-Straw-Dolls#:~:text=How%20to%20Make%20a%20Female%20Corn%20Husk%20Doll.,5%20Step%205%3A%20Create%20the%20Clothing.%20More%20items

Here is a great way to make a corn husk doll too: https://www.wikihow.com/Make-a-Corn-Husk-Doll

Get some squash (it’s okay if it’s from the store and not your garden), and other autumnal decorations from a local craft shop. I don’t know about any of you but I can’t wait to make my abode look more festive. I love autumn. It truly is a magickal season. Make a pot of wholesome nutritious squash soup to enjoy while you conjure awesome fall decor in your home!

You can also go out on a nature walk for findings. Acorns are everywhere now and flowers are withering. They sometimes dry and their colors change to gorgeous reds and browns. I want to make a harvest doll and hang it in my garden to symbolize my gratitude for the bounty from my garden.

Gather crab apples and bake an apple crisp. Rhubarb is done for the season now. Rhubarb crisp is delicious. Add garden grown strawberries for more flavor. Hang Indian corn in your apartment. Decorate with gourds, apples and orange candles.

Now you have a festive theme! Mix and match it anyway you like. Add in incense and you’re all set. Nothing screams Witch more than autumn. This is our time. This is our power.

The Virus Conondrum

Merry meet all,

The world has changed almost overnight. The entire planet holds their breath as a virus sweeps over the continents, forcing millions into panic and isolation. I am shocked at how many people are hoarding and panic buying. It has made it hard for those who truly deserve it. Here in Nova Scotia, for the first time if you are behind on your rent and having trouble paying your rent, you can’t be evicted. Shopping hours just for seniors are now a thing. It is free to take the bus but you must board from the back. People here are coming together. We are hardy stock, and a Facebook Group now is on Facebook called Caremongering: I got help for paying for food. So even though there is some bad, there is also some good.

At the same time, the government is trying its hardest to ensure that the people have no power to think for themselves. The way they do that is to induce panic and fear as far and wide as they can. I received $50 from the government today. I was grateful but I saw right through the scheme. The grocery store Superstore I often visit because it lives right close near me was thankfully busy with customers. No, that is a good thing. What was not good was that I had to walk a long way to get to the entrance where they let me in and they had a limit on how many people were permitted to enter inside. The customers were able to wipe down their carts which they did with an alarming paranoia. That is the word here: paranoia. I wasn’t allowed anywhere near the front of the bus. The freakin useless paranoia has given the government the power and it has the people right where it wants them. I don’t buy into this alarming mindless paranoia and panic that the rest of society has gobbled like they were rabid fleas after a dog. The fear which should never exist in the first place is so deeply entrenched in their minds they are doing the very thing the gov’t wants: not once questioning all of this. We have survived SARS, Ebola, H1N1, and many other diseases including the Black Plague. and guess what: I bet there is no virus and the only scary virus I have seen transferred from person to person is this: FEAR.  Yes that’s right.

I want to distance myself from all the mindless acceptance of this fearmongering. I can’t even be on Facebook without getting squeamish. It’s everywhere on Facebook, it’s inescapable there. I am instead spending more time with my cat and posting pics of my cat on Instagram. I don’t need a buspass. I don’t need to show my buspass when I board a bus. I can only board the bus from the back and like the mindless robots they all are, am not allowed to the front of the bus. See how fast society teaches you fear? Isn’t that scary? Well if you can think for yourself, it would be scary. And I am- and I am so sick of this paranoia, opting instead to be alone to escape that mindless crap. Noam Chomsky expressed it so well:

Image may contain: possible text that says 'PHILOTHOUGHTS The conception of democracy is the one that I mentioned. The bewildered herd is a problem... You've got to keep them pretty scared, because unless they're properly scared and frightened of all kinds of devils that are going to destroy them from outside or inside or or somewhere, they may start to think, which is very dangerous. Noam Chomsky PHILOTHOUGHTS'

Here is some more good cheer:

For those of you in self-isolation, allow me to enliven your quarantine. Why not buy and read my books I am published in? If horror is your thang, here are some suggestions!

Wax and Wane: A Gathering of Witchy Tales
Samhain Secrets
One Night in Salem
Untimely Frost Poetry Unthawed
Whispers of Mermaids and Wonderful Things

These books are all available on Amazon; Whispers of Mermaids is sold at Chapters. If you do get them and live in Halifax, I can autograph them too. They are great books and have very entertaining stories. After you read these fantastique books, and you had your steaming hot java, then you can peruse Penny’s antics on Instagram at #pennygingercat!!!!
Enjoy!! Buy those books!!!

Reading can help make the quarantine a more pleasant experience. I encourage you all to indeed buy these books. It’s even better with a purring cat in your lap and some coffee!! And no, you can’t get a virus from your kitty or pooch- but you might get kisses!! Much better, in my opinion.

I hope you all stay safe, my dear readers. We will all see the end of this virus and soon it will be spring. Today is spring equinox. Don’t let all this scare mongering prevent you from enjoying what we have all anticipated for weeks now. It is the first day of spring! Enjoy it!!

Samhain Secrets and drama queens

Merry meet all,

I am proud to announce that another short story of mine is published- again! Irish Horse Productions has published my short story, The Grimm Pumpkin, in Samhain Secrets. The book is available on Amazon. I am proud that my story is in its 4th reprint. It is the story of Samuel, a normal teenager who harbors a dark secrets about his ghoulish pumpkins. Here is the link to the book on Amazon. It is available as a paperback and Kindle: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07XL3RQK2/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_bibl_vppi_i1?fbclid=IwAR3xI3GzZKR-kC_Xh7W5xZNZqHHkC9OPfeQ9QZqM5zJIH9yL8tvmASJt1jo

Samhain is here!  I am very happy and I bet you are all carving pumpkins while sipping cider with your friends. I was at the witch shop yesterday. I bought a beautiful black floor length velvet dress. The public Samhain Ritual will be on the Commons this year. This is a description of the event.

At Samhain Pagans celebrate the harvest while looking death in the eye. This public ritual provides an opportunity for people to come together and take stock of the year that was. Samhain is the time to commemorate our dead and reflect on our own mortality. All that falls shall rise again and Samhain is also a beginning. A fresh page.

This annual event was born on the Commons in 1997 and has always been open to the public. The ritual is designed to be inclusive and safe and provides a doorway into modern paganism for the curious newcomer.

The event is also designed to strengthen the local Pagan community. Drumming, dancing and chanting together in ritual removes barriers and builds bridges between us. This makes for a stronger community.

Indeed! It helps you to meet new people and see familiar faces, to share a passion with like minded people. It is a good time. If it is not a good time, you have found the wrong coven and need to seek out a new one. I go every year and I have always had a good time.

Now … here are a few more pointers on how to have the best most memorable and magical time you can have in terms of drama queens and toxic people. For example, I have made the decision to quit throwing parties and seances in my home. It is unfortunate but I went too way too much work for only 1 guest to arrive. I quit. The other guests were too obnoxious to attend. But you can bet they will all be attending the Public Samhain Rit on the Commons. I can’t help but take that personally.

I know I said I usually have a good time at the Public Ritual. This year, however, I know some people ugh and that includes my ex who I suspect is already seeing someone else (ouch) will be there. I have decided that I am distancing myself and maybe if it means not even really participating or if I do, to be standing far from him so the negative energies don’t ruin the event for me. I do have a right to a good time. I am not too nice anymore. I am setting new boundaries now. If I stay far from where he is, I should be fine. We have to establish healthy boundaries around ourselves. It is good for us. Boundaries are meant for the person not the many. I am not a people pleaser. But then being someone who has seen the worst in people, if anyone had gone through what I have been put through, not that I will be anymore, you would or may feel the exact same way.

So this year, make it your priority and stick to it to avoid the drama queens and the toxic psychos out there. You can do it and you will feel good about yourself. They are not hard to spot: they want all the attention on themselves, often at the expense of someone else, and that person is the one who is hurt usually. I no longer have the time for this.

I wish you all a toxic-free, merry Samhain!!

Blessings, Spiderwitch

Jack O’ Lanterns Safety

Witch

Merry meet all,

I bought a cool pumpkin to carve yesterday. Have you all got a pumpkin to carve? I hope so. Mmm can’t you all taste the roasted seeds already?

Remember to burn candles and incense safely this Samhain. There is nothing romantic about the Fire Department arriving at your charred doorstep. Believe me. Every year we hold a Samhain Rt on the Commons and every year, some stupid muggle calls the Fire Department out of sheer ignorance. Um, we have a permit. The Fire Dept visited me to tell me I can’t burn resins in my cauldron anymore if it sets off my smoke alarm. So yesterday I bought a book titled Incense Magick by Carl Neal. I plan to read this book cover to cover and learn from it. I admit to having only a limited knowledge but now I will hopefully be able to avoid disaster.

I have another tip for you. I always compost my expired pumpkins in my garden. I don’t put them in the compost bin once they have served their duty for Samhain. I let the pumpkins rot, which takes months, and the pumpkins add nutrients to the soil. So green your pumpkins!!

Steep sage tea in a teapot and sprinkle it around your house. This creates a safe space and energy to keep out unwelcome spirits during Samhain. I wish  it could keep away nasty people. But steeping sage tea and pouring it around your property creates a boundary. I do this every Samhain and will do that either today or tomorrow.

Samhain is meant to be fun. So be safe and smart. You will enjoy Samhain even more!

Here is another spooky true tale of a ghost:

I can’t remember if it was Samhain last year or the year before that. I strolled down the hill to view the full moon on Samhain Eve. I wish the moon was full this Samhain. I strolled along the shore to enjoy the moon. I saw a man seated on a bench not far from me. As I approached him, he vanished into thin air. I went straight home.

Blessings,

Lady Spiderwitch )O(
