Garlic and autumn roots )O(

Merry meet all,

Today I want to talk about planting garlic. I planted organic garlic today in my garden. Garlic and other root veggies are very beneficial for your health. It is a good idea to stock up on root veggies to protect our health during fall and winter.

I planted garlic in the big wooden box because the soil is deep in the box. I hope this ensures the garlic will grow bigger and better. Garlic is not a perennial because I live in Atlantic Canada. We get cold here but garlic does benefit from a cold dormant season.

I had no soil so I used soil from the other pots in my garden. The garden and grassy yard is so strewn with colourful leaves. I emptied two pots of soil into the wooden box. I used the shovel to break up and loosen up the big chunks of soil and mix it in with the rest of the soil in the box. Unfortunately, I had to put the soil in over the straw but I guess the straw will compost in the soil anyway. The soil that was in the smaller planters had plants growing in it such as nasturtiums, the tomatoes, beans and chamomile. The plants are dead and withered but the soil that they grew in was full of nutrients. Earthworms have tunneled through it. I think using that soil was better than buying sterile soil from a store. Using soil already full of nutrients and had the benefit of beneficial insects working the soil is going to pass on those nutrients to the garlic and the soil the garlic grows in. I don’t have to work too hard to make any nutrients as it has already been done for me by the little unseen heroes: beneficial insects, the weather, birds, and the plants themselves. True, there is the other plant box now woefully short of soil but next spring, I will add fresh soil then.

It is so important to have soil full of natural organic ingredients. Our ancestors knew that. Back in the day, and all the way back to ancient times, famers practiced organic gardening methods. The garlic will sit there in the box all fall, winter to spring. The soil needs food to sustain the garlic during the cold season. The soil is now full of the nutrients it needs such as the straw, the Gaia Green organic fertilizer, compost, the leaves, and the garlic skins. Wow that is such a potent mix not to mention the insects that are likely nesting in the box all winter, fed by the straw, leaves and compost. What a potent combination. I will add fresh fertilizer and compost next spring and summer. For now, that will do the trick. This is making me so eager to see how the garlic turns out. Pesticides and other chemicals never offer a good enough benefit. I have a thriving garden because I never use any of those chemicals.

It felt magical to use the soil I already had and break up the chunks. It felt good to plant the garlic. We turn inward during the winter. Also today the moon is in a waning phase. It is the ideal time to plant garlic during the waning moon phase because the garlic is planted deep in the soil. During a waxing moon, we can plant things that grow above the soil.

I added fertilizer to the soil like Gaia Green organics and other fertilizers. I added the compost soil from my compost box to the box. I planted the garlic, cloves separated and pointing up. I watered the soil and tamped the soil down. I planted each clove of garlic a few inches apart from each other. I also added large rocks to the box. Squirrels and bluejays are fierce thieves. I don’t want them to uproot my garlic and dig their own holes in the soil, thereby ruining my efforts. I will harvest the garlic next summer. I am so excited about growing garlic. I just hope that this time I get the satisfaction of large bulbs. I was offered a mix of soft neck and hard neck garlic. I guess I won’t know which is which in the box till next summer.

I am very happy too that I have been patient enough to grow compost soil in my garden. I added it to the soil where I was growing the garlic. I believe that the key to growing a great garden is having your own compost available. I believe that will greatly benefit the garlic and hopefully grow better and bigger.

Garlic is extremely good for your health. I will now list a few health benefits that garlic has.

Garlic is one of the oldest cultivated plants in the world, and is a hardy perennial belonging to the Liliaceae family. Other members of this family include onions, leeks, chives and shallots. They are distinguished by their pungent aroma and distinctive flavour.

1. Contains a compound called allicin, which has medicinal properties

2. Acts like an anticoagulant, so reduces the risk of heart attacks

3. May inhibit the growth of cancerous cells

4. Has been known for its antibacterial properties

5. May relieve the symptoms of osteoarthritis

Nature is my Teacher

Merry meet all,

I participated in an amazing writing workshop yesterday led by Jonathan Maberry. The workshop was amazing and I loved every moment of it. I took notes profusely throughout the highly informative workshop. I am amazed at how much information he shared.

Stokercon is almost here! I have been so busy. The famous premier horror writing convention takes place from June 15-18th. I can’t wait. I so look forward to it and I shall post all about it here, promise!

The Summer Solstice occurs in June. I hope to have a small get together after the Solstice. It’s hot out today. I made a batch of lemon balm lemonade. It is the only way to keep cool. My cat is napping on the floor. She has so much fur I don’t know how she keeps cool, poor thing. I make extra sure her water bowl is full. My poor cat is a Norwegian Forest Cat with extra fur on her. ! I am not sure how she handles it.

Last night when I came home, the goat skull was on the floor. I scanned the new bookcase for any blatant signs of a feline intrusion like books knocked down, but no, no sign of that. When I tried to hang the skull back up in its spot, the nail fell down. Ok so that explained it. Still, I was a little spooked. I hung the skull back up.

My garden is growing gorgeously. I can’t believe it, like it’s growing too well. The arnica montana seeds that I ordered from Strictly Medicinal seeds should arrive soon. I can’t wait to have it growing in my garden again. It has been years since it grew in the garden last. I couldn’t find it anywhere. I can’t wait to see the sunny bright yellow flowers blooming all over my garden. I get 30 seeds in the packet so I intend to go a little overboard with it. I also ordered a tea making book from Herbal Academy. I am progressing nicely at the Herbal Academy.

Arnica montana has long been used as an anti-inflammatory. The beautiful sunny yellow flowers have been used in oils, tinctures, creams and salves. It is hardy to zone 9. I live in zone 6 so that is good to know. I can’t wait to grow them from seed. Once established in the garden, they will brighten and grace the garden with their gorgeous blossoms. I plan to try using them as an anti-inflammatory. There are many uses for the beautiful herbs that fill our homes, stores and gardens with their healing powers and beauty.

I like to think that nature has been my best teacher. Nature teaches me. Nature and me are one and the same. I feel such a strong energy when I am in my garden. I am sure it is growing on a place of power. Some people think the backyard was once a rock quarry. Those big rocks now edge my garden. I worked so hard on my garden and now it grows faithfully and beautifully. I feel it when I place my hands in the soil. That is when my hands tingle, like a friendly lightning is flashing on my skin. I feel this potent soul stirring connection to nature. I love, just love, to put plants in the soil. I can’t help it. It is my nature. I have to help plants grow. I love to nurture herbs and flowers- and veggies – and berries. My garden is beautiful in the sun and rain. I connect to the earth, to a shore line, to the dandelion roots I dig out of the soil for health. I bought a cheap bottle of dried basil today from Dollarama. I held the bottle of basil in my hands, closed my eyes and sent it good energy. I tried to rid the herbs of the energy from the store. Energy is real. We are all electromagnetic energy. Ghosts are electromagnetic energy. Nature is electromagnetic energy, hurricanes, ocean waves, flowers waving in the breeze, a panting dog.

It is no wonder then that I would enjoy studying at the Herbal Academy.  I am just blossoming there. Nature is my teacher, always was and always shall be. I seek no other teacher but her. We owe the Mother Goddess so much. We forget much. That will bring about the downfall which we are all skidding towards so fast. Yet many don’t want to see that. They deny and pretend it won’t happen to them. We have to respect the Mother Goddess. She will keep teaching us until we understand the lesson. I choose to honour and respect her. As a result, I believe I have been blessed with many gifts, lessons, triumph and challenges.

I see a flower growing in the garden, soaking up sun rays or allowing pollination and my heart fills with joy. A flower is beauty, grace and a reminder to be in the moment.

Let’s be in the moment

Sustaining Seedlings

Merry meet all,

This post tells you how to sustain your indoor seedlings until it is time to transplant them. I was out in my garden this morning. I’m delighted to see so many plants come up, thumbing their green noses at winter. Lady’s mantle, chives, raspberry, mullein, tiger lilies, my haskap berries, lavender, sage and red clover. These are just a few. I live in zone 6. It is not time yet to transplant the seedlings yet (how I wish). It’s hard to keep them going but this post will share tips on how to grow them to their very best potential.

The first tip I want to mention here is not to overwater them. This is why it pays off big time to do your research on plants. Sage, lavender, thyme, oregano and rosemary may originate from the Mediterranean. They like hot, arid conditions. I mist the plants with a spray bottle once to twice a day. That is it. If you do drown your plants, that can cause root rot or damping off. Then the seedlings die. Mist them, get the surface of the water wet or maybe a little more. I water them in the morning.

Make sure your plants get lots of access to sunlight. You can use a grow light if you wish. This is almost more important than the plants getting water. The natural sunlight encourages the strong plant and root growth vital for them growing so strong. Plants can turn and stretch to reach the sun. This is why you hear people telling you to turn the pots. Plants reach toward the sun.

Good soil is the next point here. My seedlings are healthier this year because I used good quality soil. I mentioned this in a previous post. I am sure it is because I used good soil instead of poor soil from the dollar store. The bad soil lacks the nutrients.

While we are at it, get good seeds too. I ordered a package of mystery seeds from Green Witch co. I am so glad I did. I have never had such good luck with seedlings as this spring. I am sure it is a combination of the watering techniques, the soil and the seeds. Plus, I don’t use peat pots. I prefer the plastic starter pots over peat pots. This is a big tip. The peat pots don’t hold water the same way as peat pots do. I also have McKenzie heirloom seeds and organic seeds.

Some people rush in using potting soil to start their seeds in. Nope, you need a good seed starting mix to grow seeds in. When they outgrow the starter pots and need to be transplanted into bigger pots, then you can use potting soil. You can even mix the two soil types together.

Be gentle with the seedlings. Transplant them gently into their new pots. Be careful with the seedlings and they take over from there. Plants are living beings and have a mind of their own. Fertilize them when they are in their new pots placed on a window ledge where sunlight streams in. Watch them grow beautifully. It is amazing how plants work.

The last point to make here is to have patience with the seedlings. You were a baby once too, and your mother was patient with you. Treat your plants the same way and they will grow into beautiful strong plants. Save the strong plants. I am not too happy that not all my seedlings have survived. I just do what mother nature does. I encourage the strongest seedlings to grow.

Store the seeds you are not using in paper envelopes or very dry jars. Seeds will last a long time that way. Be sure to label and date the containers.

If you follow all these tips, your plants may make it to transplant time. Never let the soil dry out, keep it moist. Place them in sun or under grow lights. Good luck planting!!

Blessings, Spiderwitch
