Wildfires Spark Fear

Merry meet all,

I never seem to run out of creative ideas. Now I want to buy Celtic trim and sew it to my black cloak that I was gifted years ago. I finished the elven bookcase project. I want to finish my cosplay costume. I am sure it will turn out fine.

Spring is here and everything is in bloom. Beltane is gracing us with tulips and daffodils but it still not as warm as I would like. I bought a lavender seedling and pumpkin seedlings yesterday. They are in my kitchen because I think it’s still too cold to plant them. There is no frost tonight but I am keeping an eye on it. I will plant them out in the first week of June.

The frost is gone now replaced with intense heat. It is indeed heating up, just not in the way we expected. Wildfires rage across parts of Halifax and the mainland. It is so scary, people have lost their homes, pets. It is so tragic and I don’t think enough is being done about it. This link will tell you more about the wildfire crisis.

I want to donate items to help people. I have so much stuff that I am sure I could live without it. People have lost their homes and pets and lives. About 5,000 people have been evacuated from their homes. This is a major crisis. It may rain this weekend and I hope that helps. More aid may come from the Federal Government.

The nature trail I usually go for walks on is closed off. All the major trails are closed off. The firemen have worked their hearts out. Let us hope this all ends safely and with many people returned and pets! safely to their homes.

Blessed Be, Spiderwitch

Samhain Mysteries

Merry meet all,

The colourful leaves trickle down to the earth. The overcast sky hangs low. But the fiery leaves brighten the afternoon sky. I see a haze like a misty translucent curtains that has fallen over the backyard and nature trail. I like to think that is the elusive and famous veil between the worlds. Samhain is here, at least to me. I ventured out in my garden today to remove the frost blanket as I do everyday. The frost blanket shields the still growing plants from the cold. A pumpkin has begun growing in the garden – yes, in October. I found flowers on my haskap plant and the pumpkin regularly shows off flowers. I mean I don’t get it. It has not been too cold this month which could explain a lot. Even my cucumber vine is showing a new flower. I don’t get it. I do feel duty bound to protect the plants. Everything else has withered and died back. Everything except for the nasturtiums, lemon balm, thyme, and oregano and what I mentioned above.

This is the time when pumpkins are harvested not grown. Ok if my plants choose to do so, fine. I shall do my best to protect and nurture it. I may get a small pumpkin before the killing frost hits. Who knows?

Last night I brewed mulled cider. Yum! I also harvested mullein root for a tincture. I brought my cellphone with which has an app called Seek. The Seek app aids me by identifying which plant is which. Seek did identify the plant as great mullein. I dug up the roots of the plants, brought them home, scrubbed them clean and chopped it into smaller pieces. I bought a small bottle of vodka. I’ll let the roots dry out for a week to draw out any moisture in the roots and then mix it together. It will steep for 4 to 6 weeks after which I strain it out. I found and saved a LOT of nasturtium seeds and my Mom gave me a huge puppy of poppy seeds. I truly look forward to next spring. !!! The poppy seeds and the nasturtium seeds are stored in clean ziplock baggies. I love poppies. Next to purple coneflower and nasturtiums and pansies, they are the prettiest flowers.

For all you horror fans in Canada hankering for a spooky The Haunted Museum episodes, Discovery Plus is now available in Canada! I am excited about  this good news too. You can subscribe now and then never miss a single episode.

I tried to do a seance last night. But no spirits came through. I was a little disappointed but I made a true effort to commune with spirits regardless. I performed a spirit guide meditation, burned candles and incense and did a few divinations. I used a pendulum to tell me if spirits were close. Nope. I used my ouija board. Nope. I asked the spirits if they were present. Nope. Ok or at least as far as I know, the spirits weren’t there. They could have been hiding. I don’t control them. I wonder if the black salt I sprinkled around the doorways kept them from entering. Hmmm.

Black salt, my own concoction, is intended to protect a home. Yet this is the time when spirits are reputed to haunt the realm of the living. The ancient Celts believed that. I blended white table salt with cauldron ash, crushed charcoal bits, black pepper and incense ash together in a jar. I labeled and stored the jar.

A cat that mewed constantly and sought affection from me the other night has been found! The poor little kitty. It gets cold out at night here. I felt so bad leaving the furry mewing little wonder. The cat’s name is Gilbert. He is not feral as he did wear a collar. I wanted to hand him over to anyone who did own the cat but had no idea who they were. I tried carrying the kitty and considered knocking on every door till I got him back to his home. But Gilbert wouldn’t let me. Thankfully, since the owner is out of town, the owner’s friend returned the mewing little wonder home safe and sound. I am so happy the kitty is safe. If he got in my apartment, fang, fur and bone would be flying! Penny would have been pissed. It ended well, which is good.

I would love, I mean love, to have another cat. Penny is having none of it. Ah well, she didn’t have an easy time of it. The home she lived in before she took over mine had a dog that was mean to her. Here, Penny feels like the big one and that is fine with her.

This Samhain, please keep your feline furries inside. Some shelters don’t even adopt out black cats during this time of year. The cats face terrible threats such as being returned to the shelter, or killed by a car or another animal or abandoned. Abandoning a cat only hurts and confuses the poor thing. They will never know what they did wrong. If you do adopt, it is a commitment. So let’s show our pets extra love this season. !!

Blessed Be, Spiderwitch

Spirit Boxes

Merry meet all,

I just received my new Spirit Box in the mail. I am so excited! I watched a tutorial on Youtube about how to operate it. I already own an EMF detector. I am eager to begin detecting spirits in my home or in haunted areas of Halifax. We have the Civil war here, the Titanic victims and the victims of the Halifax Explosion here. You can all then understand my enthusiasm.

A Spirit box is a paranormal research device. It uses a radio with a frequency scan code meant to rapidly sweep the frequency  channels of radio stations creating a white noise effect. This allows spirits to affect the white noise and communicate through it. Clear sounds can be caught while the device scans a multitude of radio stations. The faster the sweep, the clearer the sounds are.

If you hear a robotic voice answer your questions, congrats, that is the spirit talking. Here are some questions to ask that are effective in getting responses:

  • Are you here?
  • Is there anyone here?
  • Where are you?
  • How old/young are you?
  • What do you want?
  • Show yourself
  • Give us a sign
  • Talk to me/us
  • Open a door
  • Turn on/off the light

I plan to attempt communicating with spirits using my Spirit box and my K-II EMF meter. This shall be fun. I will also jot my sessions in my Book of Shadows. Just like when using a pendulum, keep the questions easy to answer. It shows a respect for the spirits. It is unwise to ever disrespect the spirits. If you don’t believe me, then ask Zac Bagans why he wears prism glasses now and for the rest of his life.

On a side-note  I worry about Zac. He can’t die. He has to not die. I say this because the spirits that he provoked or angered now will recognize him when he finally crosses over. I hope they don’t do terrible things to him. I will never know of course, but I still worry.

I bought my Spirit box from Amazon.com. I live in Atlantic Canada but it was shipped to me so fast. Wow. Spirit boxes are available on Amazon and other sites if you are interested in attempting your own spirit communication. I highly encourage you to do so. Paranormal devices are so widely available now. Move over, Ghostbusters. The devices are now found in many homes in North America. We can all do research on our own these days.

I shall have fun investigating my own very haunted hometown. The window that steadfastly remains haunted no matter how many times it is replaced, the haunted 5 Fishermen restaurant, the Halifax Explosion, the harbour front. Oh I can’t wait to get started.

And that’s a good thing! It’s paranormal groups like Ghost Adventures that has made this possible for people who seek their own spooky fun in investigations. I have covered some of those groups on this blog. The future looks bright – and spooky for those with a passion for the paranormal – like me! My cat is my assistant. She’s napping on her cat bed right now. She is so darn cute!

Use caution and common sense. You cannot assume that every sound that comes out of a Spirit box though is a ghost. Learn when you get a false positive and what can be debunked. If you hear footsteps and your team member is just walking up behind you, or there’s a draft that causes a door to open, it could just have a rational explanation. Be skeptical until you rule out all causes. Then you have to accept the unexplainable.

Remember: Never summon what you can’t banish!

Blessings, Spiderwitch

How to lead a paranormal investigation

Merry meet all,

Paranormal investigations are the hot topic now. Read this post for info on how to go on an investigation of your own,

One of the first things to keep in mind is that you have to rule out a haunting or disprove it. Only when you can’t disprove it do you then progress onto a good reason for the haunting. A door opening by itself could be explained by a draft or open window. An orb could be explained by a light from a room. Rule out any logical reason for a weird event first.

Research the location. Try to find out if there were any traumatic experiences such as murders or suicides . Or if there are any other reports of any paranormal occurrences there or in the neighborhood.

Return to the location to duplicate the experience. Return to the area with a few ghost hunting tools. See if the event repeats itself and take a friend to act as a witness. The tools can consist of electromagnetic frequencies or electronic voice phenomena, or a way to measure temperatures.

If you hear voices- I can’t hear ghosts but I see and sense them, then record them with the EVP recorder. It may take a long time and many efforts to record something so don’t be easily discouraged. If you see a ghost, then set up a way to record sound and temperature changes. A video recorder and a flashlight are very useful to have around too. Often it is dark where you investigate. A flashlight with extra chargeable batteries is mandatory. That and wear good comfortable sensible shoes.

Be objective. Just because you hear spooky bumps in the night doesn’t mean it is a ghost. Be open to every possibility. Once you gather enough evidence, then you can call in the professional paranormal investigation team(s) in your area. But be careful of cons or scams.

  • “Try investigating with a friend or two.

  • Never be scared to ask questions, even if you think no one is there.

  • Set up motion sensors. Paranormal activity can trigger motion sensors.

  • Maintain caution in what you deal with. (Do you want to star in a recreation of The Exorcist?)

  • Be professional: A well-groomed and intelligent person is more convincing than an unkempt, raving lunatic.

  • Be prepared for ridicule: If you make your findings or research public you will be laughed at.

  • Stand by your findings. You went through all that work, at least get credit for it.

  • Read and study: Monsters by John Michael Greer is a good start.”

Read the book Ghost Hunting for Dummies by Zac Bagans. It is the leading ‘textbook’ on ghost hunting.

Thank the people for their time if they let you visit. Be polite and professional. And remember to have fun.

Blessings, Spiderwitch
