Interview with horror author Destiny Eve Piper )O(

Merry meet all,

Welcome everyone to another awesome interview with a horror author! Today Destiny Eve Pifer  joins us to chat on horror fiction. 

Why horror? Do you have a favorite subgenre in horror?

 

I grew up watching horror movies and some classic horror anthology series like Tales From the Crypt, Friday the 13th the Series, The Hitchhiker, Tales from the Darkside, Kolchak: The Night Stalker and Freddy’s Nightmares. I fell in love with horror and fell even more in love with books like R.L. Stine’s Fear Street. So growing up exposed to horror sparked a great passion in me. My favorite subgenre in horror is Occult/Supernatural

Which other horror authors influenced you the most and why?

 

Aside from R.L. Stine I was inspired by authors such Christopher Pike, Ruby Jean Jensen, Michael McDowell, Caroline Cooney, Lois Duncan and John Saul.

Tell me about your writing/ editing process 

I write first and then go back and reread my work and then start the editing process. If I stop to edit then I lose my train of thought and so it’s best just to get the words out first. At least that is how I do it.

What inspires you to write horror?

I am able to lose myself in a whole other world and since I grew up inspired by horror I find myself drawn to writing about things that would not only scare me but scare my readers.

What do you love about indie publishing?

Well I like that they actually gave my book a chance and will be publishing it on August 15. I also like that they are a tight-knit community and I have had the privilege of meeting so many talented writers. I have learned so much from them and so much about the publishing process.

Which is your favorite horror movie or book? Which movie or book impressed and inspired you the most?

My favorite horror movie is the 1984 Fright Night with Chris Sarandon. It was perfectly done and the cast was outstanding. I loved the story and Chris Sarandon who I had the pleasure of meeting in person made a fantastic vampire. I have two favorite horror books and they are “The Exorcists House” and “ My Best Friend’s Exorcism.”

Is there any music that helps you to write?

I am a total music addict so I listen to a variety of music. If I am working on a hardcore horror story I am inspired by Alice Cooper, Ghost, Dorothy, Bring Me the Horizon, Crown the Empire, Spiritbox and of course Stevie Nicks.

Do you have any special projects you want readers to know about?

Yes my debut horror novel “The House that Echoed Madness” is being released on August 15, 2024

Diversity

 

My Mom’s pot of nasturtiums!

Merry meet all,

Oh my the heat! I was just out in my garden. I love summer and everything about it. I love being able to wear what I want and relax. I am the most relaxed all year during the summer. Who can argue with sun, always being warm and that total sense of freedom? 

Today I want to write about diversity in the field of publishing and writing. I do support it. It is about time that more voices were heard. I love the works of the diverse writers published today. It is so sorely needed. The publishing world – the books that are produced were never meant to be only by white male writers. Not that I am knocking that, they are valid too, but all voices are valid. All the voices have something to say. But a white writer born in Colorado won’t know what it is truly like to grow up Hispanic or Chinese or gay or  as trans. You have to truly experience it to know it. It has to seep in your bones and stew in your blood, it has to consume you, emerge from your true self to pour onto the page. It represents you and it is you and it is special. 

I would hate to grow up on a planet with one culture, one race, one identity, one way of being. I would find that so boring. I want to eat at Mexican restaurants, learn a little Spanish, visit that amazing Middle Eastern restaurants and wear Nordic inspired outfits. Now how is that for culture variety? 

I read an amazing novel by Gabino Iglesias titled The Devil takes you home. I was amazed. The problem with today’s society is this movement of conformity being shovelled down our throats on the streets, in media and in the news. If that is not incentive for you to be your true self, then what is. I struggled to understand the words written in the language he truly knows. Nevertheless, I tried. I don’t understand a single word of Spanish. I know the English language very well of course. I believe that we all have to make efforts to understand each other and all the things we have to say and listen with our ears  -and hearts. We see with our hearts and ears. I hope we can all find a common middle ground or at least try to get halfway there. 

I remember when my Mother took in international boarders. That was so much fun. They brought their traditions, clothing and great cooking with them. I loved it. I struggled at times to understand what they were saying. But I would always try. I love chicken curry and the other awesome meals I was exposed to. I would not expect them to just give up who they are and do nothing but eat (boring) Canadian food. I am a diehard fan of ethnic food. 

I hate it when I see violence against black people, for example. It is mean and ugly and cruel. If we can all understand each other at my Mom’s house, and share cultures, then why isn’t that way in the world? But sadly, that is a naive way of viewing it. It is not that simple. I just hope that one day it is. The variety of cultures on earth is not just going away, so thankfully, most people are not out to hurt each other. To me, based on what I have shared in this post, you can see why I support diversity. I hope for a brighter future of not war but love, true understanding. 

I want to read books by Owl Goingback, Linda Addison and Sumiko Saulson and many others. Linda Addison helped edit an anthology titled Sycorax’s daughters. Not one single white author in the whole book! 

Let’s understand each other and support diversity. Let’s stand together.

My fave horror authors!! )O(

Merry meet all,

I love my new spooky  shower curtain from Killstar. The curtain came with black shower rings for hanging it up. I could not ask for more. The bland white shower curtain I will give to my Mom. She likes white and I love black. We are so different. I mean very different from each other. I am waiting for a pair of Dark Lord slippers to be delivered today’s also bought from Killstar. The slippers arrived! The Dark Lord shall keep my feet warm this winter!!! 

I can’t wait for my slippers. My feet are shivering! Speaking of shivering, the Wheel of the Year turns to the Winter Solstice. I can’t believe it is that time of year. I have decided I will set up my goth tree.  I made some cute gnome ornaments last year. I want to dig them out this year. 

I totally binge watched the Wednesday series on Netflix. I was blown away by the show. Wow,  I love it. Let’s not leave out Krampus. 

I want to sew a lot of kitty catnip pouches and donate them to an animal shelter. I bought cute fabric the colour of pink or lavender. The fabric has a cute cat print on it and is made of flannel. I’m going to buy a huge amount of catnip to stuff the pouches with. I can’t wait to donate them. I plan to sew the pouches at my Mom’s. If I do it here, Penny will never let me get anything done. Yeah cats love catnip, which is why this will work. 

Giving is important at this time of year. I feel like Santa Paws, donating hand sewn items to an animal shelter. Every one of those cats (and dogs) wants a home. I hope to brighten their days they spend at the shelter, hoping against hope they will be adopted. I am sure the donations are appreciated by the staff and hopefully the kitties will love the pouches too. I may add some doggy bones for their canine pals too. 

I want to post about the horror authors I truly admire: Tim Waggoner. I love this author. Waggoner is contemporary and is so good, keeping horror at the forefront for readers and making horror relevant!!! I admire him very much, so amazing and down to earth. 

Tim Waggoner’s latest novel is titled We will Rise. I can’t wait to read it. I love books in print. I am not a Kindle chick. I will buy it on Amazon or Indigo. The book is about a ghost apocalypse. I am so intrigued! 

‘He’s the author of the acclaimed horror-writing guide Writing in the Dark, which won the Bram Stoker Award in 2021. He won another Bram Stoker Award in 2021 in the category of short nonfiction for his article “Speaking of Horror,” and in 2017 he received the Bram Stoker Award in Long Fiction for his novella The Winter Box. In addition, he’s been a multiple finalist for the Shirley Jackson Award and the Scribe Award, and a one-time finalist for the Splatterpunk Award. I have Tim Waggoner’s book Writing in the Dark which won a Bram Stoker Award. Writing in the Dark is an awesome textbook Writing in the Dark.  I  love it! He also did a follow up on Writing in the Dark with a workbook. I have both and I do use them for my own writing. If you are serious about writing, horror specifically, you will find these books most valuable. It is chock full of writing advice and tips you could find it hard to get elsewhere. He also offers advice from many other authors, not just him. I love that the other authors are included. Most books don’t offer that. This makes the book far more awesome. 

I am so happy that Waggoner authors are publishing books like these. I recently penned a novella. I hope to get it published. I nominated Tim Waggoner for a Bram Stoker Award. I believe he deserves it. He is so cool too. Maybe someday I can meet him. I hope he continues to publish such amazing books. Well I want that too. I think my writing path is easier and brighter with Tim Waggoner! We are all a global community and we can support each other in our writing.
