Merry Meet All,
Wow! Lammas is a week away. It won’t be long before Samhain is here. Lammas is the first of the three harvests. Lammas is on August 1st so mark your calendars. It is a time to either/or celebrate Lugh and celebrate the early harvest.
Grain is a significant symbol of Lammas. It was crucial to the early days when grain was associated with death and rebirth. The god dies only to be reborn in the spring. Lammas was a day to honor Lugh, the Celtic craftsman god. He is a god of many skills and baking your own loaf of bread on Lammas would be a perfect way to honor him.
To decorate your altar, use fiery colors to show the continual heat of the sun-symbolizing that summer is enduring and the change of the leaves in the trees to come. Include symbols of the field on your altar. Sickles, scythes and baskets of grain, and loaves of bread would be ideal. Cover your altar with cloths in shades of yellows, oranges, browns and greens. Harvest herbs, berries and fruit to decorate your altar with. Make a corn dolly and put sheafs of grain on your altar or ears of corn. If you have a statue of Lugh, leave offerings at the foot of it. If you have a boline that has a sickle-shaped blade, leave that on your altar to represent the early harvest.
The Sabbat that folows Lammas is Mabon. It is summer still but in time, the leaves will change color and a chill will creep into the air. A magickal time of year is around the corner. I hope you find a way to celebrate with friends and family.
New Moon is on August 30th. That would be a good time to begin to prepare for Lammas. You can read more about preparing and celebratting Lammas at About.com.
Blessed Be,
