A Ritual to honor the Morrigan + Ancestors at Samhain

spooky trees

Merry meet all,

Samhain is around the corner. I am soon off to my fave metaphysical shop, Little Mysteries, to collect ‘provisions’ for Samhain. I plan to hold a ritual part indoors and out on Samhain Eve. I have also transitioned in my magickal practice. I own a large cauldron now. I take it as a gift that I have advanced in my magickal practice. I also feel the Morrigan is now my next matron deity and I plan to hold a major dedication ritual to her. I felt more energy when I included the Morrigan in my recent esbat.

The Morrigan is a Celtic crone Goddess. She can be found on the fields of battle as a crow or in her own aspect. She is highly magickal. Ravens are sacred to her.

This ritual can be easily adapted for solitary use if needed. Begin by casting a circle, if your tradition requires it. Prior to starting the ceremony, place three sheaves of corn or wheat around the ritual space. You’ll also need a statue or other image of the God and of the Goddess at the center of your altar. Around the statues, place five candles — red and black to represent the dark aspect of the Goddess, green and brown to symbolize the wild God, and white for the hearth and home.

Place a plate of dark bread, enough for each person present, near the center of the altar, along with a cup of wine or cider. Circle the altar. The youngest person present will act as the Handmaiden, and the oldest as the High Priest (HP) or High Priestess (HPs). If you’re performing this rite as a solitary, simply take on both parts. The HPs lights the red and black candles, and says:

A pair of candles is lit
in honor of the Goddess.
She is Maiden and Mother throughout the year
and tonight we honor her as Crone.
Next, the HPs lights the brown and green candles, saying:

A pair of candles is lit
in honor of the God.
He is wild and fertile and animal
and tonight we honor him as the Horned God.
The Handmaiden takes the bread and walks the circle with the plate, allowing each person to tear off a chunk. As they do so, she says:
May the blessings of the Goddess be upon you.
The cup of wine or cider is passed around, and each person takes a sip. As they do, the Handmaiden should say:
May the blessings of the God be upon you.
The Handmaiden then lights the fifth candle, for the hearth, saying:

This candle is lit
in honor of hearth and home.
The mother and father, the Goddess and God,
watch over us tonight as we honor them.
The HPs then takes over, saying:
We light these five candles
for the powerful Goddess
and her mighty horned consort, the God,
and for the safety of home and hearth.
On this, the night of Samhain,
when the Goddess is a wise Crone,
and the God is a wild stag,
we honor them both.
The Handmaiden says:

This is a time between the worlds,
a time of life and a time of death.
This is a night unlike any other night.
Ancient ones, we ask your blessing.
Goddess, great Crone, mother of all life,
we thank you for your wisdom.
Horned God, master of the wild hunt, keeper of the forest,
we thank you for all that you provide.
At this time, the rest of the group may also say thanks. If you wish to make an offering to the God and Goddess, now is the time to place it upon the altar.
Once all offerings have been made, and thanks given, take a moment to meditate on the new beginnings of Samhain. Consider the gifts that the gods have given you over the past year, and think about how you might show them your gratitude in the coming twelve months. As the old year dies, make room in the new year for new things in your life. You may not know yet what’s coming, but you can certainly imagine, dream and hope. Tonight, this night between the worlds, is the perfect time to imagine what things may come.

End the ritual in the way called for by your tradition.

Tips:

Decorate your altar with symbols of the God — antlers, acorns, pine cones, phallic symbols — and representations of the Goddess, such as red flowers, cups, pomegranates, etc.
If your tradition honors a specific pair of male and female deities, feel free to substitute their names in this ritual wherever it says God or Goddess.

I found this ritual on Facebook. Feel free to adapt it to suit your needs. Have a magickal Samhain

Blessed be,

Lady Spiderwitch )O(

Organic Food alternatives

ImageMerry meet all,

For the rest of this week, I shall cover the alternatives that are available. They are not hard to find. Imagine a world where a grocery store sold nothing but organic food. That may occur in the future, but not today. I wish.

However, today I will talk about quinoa. Quinoa is a grain that contains all the nutrients that you need. The book Quinoa: The Everyday Superfood has more than 170 delicious recipes. It is written by Patricia Green and Carolyn Hemming. The book is available in bookstores.

Quinoa contains all eight essential amino acids and is great for those with gluten intolerance. If you buy a grinder, and buy some organic quinoa-which is delicious, you can create your own flour to make breads, muffins, pancakes. Imagine! You would never have to buy white bread or even whole what flour again.

I enjoy eating a plate of quinoa sprinkled with salt + pepper, and organic soy sauce or tamari sauce. It is satisfying and leaves me feeling light and more clearheaded. You cannot go wrong with quinoa.

The problem is, is that white flour and white bread, both of which are harmful to your health, are so readily available on the market. Well we know who to blame for that. But the other side of the coin is that the people who buy white bread or even nonorganic whole wheat bread are unaware of the alternatives available on the market.

Demand that your local grocery stores continue to supply organic food. If you do, and the stores carry it, then it will continue to be available. Because otherwise you are consuming chemically poisoned food. Ask yourself why you would want to put that energy into your body? Ugh.

Quinoa is the new flour

Respect for the Earth- The importance of choosing organic food

Divination- Tea Leaf readings

Merry meet all,

I am now on a mission! I was inspired by the Starhawk Workshop. While I was there, it came to my attention that people are not aware enough of the importance of organic food. Now it is important to be aware. So my mission is to help make people more aware. That is what I am going to blog about here and try to make people more aware on a local level in my community.

Being aware means many things. It means that you make healthier food choices, that you are critical of where you spend your hard earned money, that you strive to benefit the environment, that you boycott restaurants such as McDonalds or Wendys or Starbucks. It means that you are committed to helping the environment. It means that you are educated about the harsh realities of GMO food and stand against Monsanto. It means that you harbour a deep love of our Mother Earth, a love so deep it would never occur to you to step inside McDonalds. It means that you do not support that animals are forced into inhumane conditions and injected with chemicals. Those animals never see daylight or eat grass. How would you feel if you were in such a situation?

Organic food is produced more humanely, retains the necessary nutrients, and is healthier for you. It saves the lives of bees, helps support local farmers, and lets you eat with a conscience. This may not seem like much but each step you take towards choosing organic food over processed does help the environment. Organic food keeps farmers in business and the more you insist on organic food being available, the more that the large grocery stores have to supply it. So keep buying organic food to make it available to as many people as possible.

Commit to selecting organic food. You will stay fit, be healthier, help the environment and know you made a smart choice. When I was at the Starhawk workshop, I found it hard to eat the food that was served because the food wasn’t organic. The food that is being served should reflect the nature of the workshop. I had to throw a lot out and just eat my nature trail seeds because I couldn’t stomach the processed food. That is how committed I am to my course. It shocked me, the quality of food that was served to people. However, I had little choice.

This is what I am trying to communicate. Not enough people are aware that organic food, toiletries, even linens are available and that it would benefit them much more than they realize.

So stay tuned to learn more of the importance of organic food here. Trust me, the bees, birds, local farmers and your own body will thank you for it.

Blessed Be,

Lady Spiderwitch )O(

On Crossing Stony Ground- Starhawk Retreat

Lammas Harvest

Merry meet all,

I spent a weekend in Tatamagouche at the On Crossing Stony Ground spiritual retreat with none other than the grand dame of magick, Starhawk herself. Yes she came to Nova Scotia Canada to lead a workshop on earth activism. I was in awe of her. It was an amazing weekend and I enjoyed the meditations and exercises.

The whole weekend was amazing. I knew the weekend would be transformational. It is not often Starhawk ventures to Canada. Thank the Goddess for her Chicago flight delay. I arrived, registered, and prepared myself for a mind blowing adventure.

Starhawk encouraged us to become more passionate and caring for the state of the earth. She led us through many guided meditations and exercises, indoors and out. Once, when we did an outdoor meditation to ground ourselves, my feet tingled! We were told to extend roots from the soles of our feet down to the earth and send the energy back up to the sky. I imagined I was the tree that is frequented by chickadees at my garden. Then, indoors. we had to find a way to express the transformation. We used body language and still communicated what we wanted to show.  I loved every minute of the rituals. The ritual on Saturday night was the best and it has been a long time since I have experienced such a deep guided public ritual.

She believes everything and everyone in the world is connected and interconnected. We do not have to fear the earth, but be the loving child and environmentally sensible earth child we all can be. She also taught us to create a goal to do to express our care for the earth and express the goal in a more positive framework. For example, instead of saying “war on drugs”, which are strong masculine words, to reframe it and use more feminine words and still make a strong statement. You have to create a different energy field and you have to create it using different symbols. She encouraged us to practice organic gardening methods which I know all about. I have posted several posts all about organic gardening. I had a good talk with her about organic gardening, which I already practice. I understood her completely. I was shocked that some of the participants ate from McDonald’s Restaurant since the entire point of the retreat was to practice and implement more earth care. Talk about hypocrisy.

She also discussed how we need to remember ourselves. We are entitled to our magickal heritage and gifts. We all have the ability to sense auras and energies. She was so amazing, so powerful, so spiritual, and loving and clearly an experienced leader who oozed power and authority. She signed my copy of Spiral Dance! I will now be buying all her books and audio CDs. I am inspired and renewed.

The weekend was transformational and enlightening. I hope to have such an honor and experience with her in the future again.

The New Moon shines on September 4. Mabon lands on September 21st, the second harvest Sabbat. I hope you are all prepared for Mabon. I love Mabon. I am now blessed from that retreat and recharged. Bring the harvest on!

Protective Mugwort

witches-round-the-altar2.jpg

Merry meet all,

It’s 70 more days to Samhain!! Are you excited? I am!! It’s time to be preparing for Samhain. Samhain is the traditional Celtic Witches New Year. I feel a little chill in the air this morning.

The day of the Full Moon, I harvested a large stalk of mugwort. The mugwort is drying on a towel in my kitchen. Mugwort can be used in divinations, dream work, teas, incense, to cleanse crystal balls. It can be used to smudge a ritual area. Mugwort’s versatility for magickal spellworkings makes it a popular herb.

I listened to a podcast by Selena Fox on Pagan Circle podcast. She talked about mugwort and its many magickal uses. I enjoyed the podcast and since I am growing organic mugwort in my kitchen witch’s magickal herb garden, I can make the most of the traditional witch’s herb. Also, trimming the mugwort allows it grow back, which is another bonus. It will soon be time to harvest your bounty from your herb garden. I hope you have a great harvest of herbs, flowers, and vegetables. I also hope they were organic and free of harmful pesticides. You retain more nutrients and the volatile oils of some of your plants by keeping them organic. The veggies, herbs, and flowers I grow are as organic. I used organic soil too.

Now the moon is waning. The next Sabbat in the Wheel of the Year is Mabon, a magickal time in its own right. Waning moon is the time to draw away from you that which no longer serves you. Banishings and purification spells are good to do now. I steeped mugwort tea and poured it on the ground deosil in a circle all around my apartment. We had to dig up tree roots here to get them out of the pipes. There was lots of upheavel. The tea circle will now replenish and strengthen the energy here, cleanse away the negative energies, and protect the area. I was up 6 am to pour the tea. I am sure I might look strange to onlookers walking in a circle pouring out tea from a teapot. I like to be discreet when I do that. I also want to do this at Samhain.

I also recommend smudging your home on the inside every full moon. That strengthens the magickal shield inside your home. Autumn, or the Fall season, is the best time to stock up on magickal provisions. My pantry is almost empty. I intend to stock up on herbs and other magickal tools for spell workings this season.

Blessed Be, Lady Spiderwitch

Meeting animal totems on the Path

Crowinsunset

Merry meet all,

Recently a garter snake, chickadees, spiders, and a black cat visited me when I was outdoors. The chickadees enjoy the seeds from the feeder. But the garter snake is a sacred creature of the Goddess and a black cat is a traditional animal familiar of Witches. I am always on the watch for auspicious signs and you can’t get a more auspicious sign than a visit from the creatures that are the most associated with Witches. Perhaps a toad will visit me soon, too.

Every August, spiders rule the garden here. I was outside to check on my garden before heading out on the trail. I became tangled in a spider web and the spider went down the front of my dress. I shook and freaked out and the spider crawled away on the ground. I like to fancy myself a calm and collected person when it comes to spiders. I love spiders and I never harm them. But I don’t want them crawling on my body. Spiders are symbols of patience, cunning, and are excellent predators.

I was out on the nature trail and looked down at the ground. There, on the paved road, was a snake. I lightly tapped it with my foot and to my wonder, the snake slithered into the protective foliage. Snakes are symbols of rebirth and the oroborus.

The black cat is a well-known anima familiar. A black cat lazed in the sun and mewed at me, enjoying the sunny weather and the cool shade under the trees. I greeted her and petted her soft head, then continued on my way. Black cats are associated with witchcraft, magic, mystery and the moon.

These creatures are also connected to the Goddess. The Full Moon is tomorrow night. Samhain is three months from now. I take the visits from these critters to mean that I should prepare now for the Full Moon and the harvest season. I would love to hear from you if you’ve had any visits from critters in your life. It’s all right if you have pets. I would like to hear about that, too.

Blessed Be,
Lady Spiderwitch )O(

Tools for Gardening Magic

Merry Meet All,

Today we are going to talk about gardening tools. It is almost that time of year to dig out our gardening tools. You can get ahead of the game by cleaning and repairing your tools now. Why not make it a ritual? Put on some nice music, light a candle, and get to work. Throw out what will no longer serve you. Clean your tools with a herbal infusion containing cleansing properties. Rosemary, lavender, and peppermint are appropriate. You can opt to use salt too. I stored my garden knick knacks and tools in a clear plastic bag in my broom closet.

The snow is clawing back from the soil. Soon plants will emerge. I plan to clean my tools and rake away the old leaves to clear the way for fresh soil and some fertilizer. Check your supply of fertilizer and watch for when soil is locally available. That can tell you when it is time to garden. I know not all of you keep the leaves on your garden all winter but there are benefits to it. Insects won’t nest, but they will if you leave it all year. Also, the leaves protect the plants all winter. To me, there is nothing quite like raking leaves and inhaling the scent of the leaves, that musty earthy scent. I toss them in a green recycling bin and feel good, helping the environment.

Rejoice in the return of spring. Celebrate it with friends and keep an eye on my posts. I will post more about Ostara. Ostara is almost here. Seeing your fairy statues, or toadstools back in your garden will help you to shrug off the heavy worries of winter.

Blessed Be,

Alfalfa seeds startup

Merry Meet All,

If you are eager to start growing food, consider growing alfalfa seeds to welcome the spring season. I like Mumm’s Sprouting Seeds, the ones you see in the small green plastic bags. The type I have is called Sandwich Booster and contains clover, alfalfa, radish, and green kale. The stuff is delicious and I always add it to my salads. Oh it tastes so good. It is organic too!

Here is how you can make your own. It is easy to do. Find and sterilize a large clear mason jar. There are two methods shown here but the method I used was the jar method. Soak the seeds for two to six hours. Put one to two tablespoons of seeds in a wide mouthed jar. Cover jar with screen or mesh and secure with a rubber band. Add water, swirl and drain. Refill with 1 cup of water. Soak seeds for two to six hours. Drain water.

Rinse the seeds twice a day by refilling with water and gently swirling. Drain the water. Invert the jar and prop at an angle in a sink or bowl. Keep the jar out of sunlight. In time, the seeds will sprout and grow to a bigger size so make sure the jar is large.

The sprouts are ready to eat in three to six days. Keep in the jar in a sealed container. Store the bag of seeds in a cupboard and out of direct sunlight.

The second method

Rinse enough seed to fill the bottom of a sprouting tray. Cover seeds with water for two to six hours. Smaller seeds that fall through the cracks of the tray can be grown in a jar (why I prefer the jar method.) Drain, and tilt the tray to remove the excess water. Spread seed evenly on the bottom of the sprouting tray. Cover with lid or plastic bag.

Rinse twice a day. Remove the lid and rinse tray with a mister or dipping in a sink of water. Be sure not to lose the seeds.

These sprouts contain no harmful chemicals, synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides or fungicides and used environmentally friendly methods. The seeds were not grown from genetically modified seeds. That sounds delicious to me.

Blessed Be,
Lady Spiderwitch
