Magic Gown

DRESSBEAUTY

Merry meet all,

I have sewn myself a gorgeous stunning black gown. I am so proud of it. I love the gown. That’s a good thing because it was so much work to sew. The pattern I used is the Arwen gown. I have a Simplicity pattern that I have used before. I donated those gowns to a local thrift store. There’s no way I would donate this beauty. Oh no. She’s a beauty.

I bought the material for it back in October. That is how long I have been working on the dress. I sewed the gown with painstaking care. It shows that I took gentle and loving care sewing it. I wanted the dress to have an appearance of mystery, magic and something ethereal. The devil is in the details, they say.

Yup. Truth. I wore the dress a lot, showing off my prowess, or so I thought. It turns out that the centre back section was at the front of the dress and the centre front section was at the back. I told myself I would get a tailor to do it. Nope. Guess what? I put my seam ripper to work, spending an entire weekend switching the front centre and back centre sections. The change is so amazing. Then the collar was twisted because I switched the sections. I fixed that and added a strip of black lace to the black lace collar. I stitched on a ribbon underneath the collar to conceal the interfacing. The back centre sections is where the zipper would go so I had to seam rip it and sew it on the back of the gown. It was just so much work.

Shown: early stage of gown construction-

I bought some wide black velvet ribbon and thin regular black ribbon. But I had a problem with the sleeves. Ugh. The upper cap sleeve is covered in black lace (which actually looks grey), and had to be eased in to the armhole. I stitched between the notches on the cap sleeve and pulled the thread tails. Mercifully it went well. I took my time and did it with care. It was the lower sleeves that would give me grief. The upper part of the lower sleeve has to match up correctly with the notches and markings. The long arch of the lower sleeve always points to the floor. The short part is up. You can see the dress in the photo. Also, I added a second sleeve that is hidden. The hem of the lace sleeve is what my arm goes through and the first initial sleeve is the over sleeve if that makes sense. The first initial sleeve that I worked on so laboriously has a ribbon casing. I worked in ribbon casings so I could draw the sleeve up if I want to. It is lined and edged with lace. On the outside, at the part where the lower sleeve meets the sleeve cap, I added tulle edged with black lace seam binding. I hand stitched the tulle to the upper sleeve cap to give it the look of the tulle being attached to the black lace sleeve cap. The tulle conceals the stitching of the lower sleeve to the sleeve cap.

I spent an entire day seam ripping the lower sleeve from the sleeve cap. I didn’t plan on having to seam rip through so many fabric layers- lace, lining and sleeve. Then I had the headache of creating the sleeve casing for the drawstring cords, which on one side was too narrow to fit a pin through. Then the cords were long on the wrong side- toward upper sleeve. Then the casings weren’t open enough. Then I had to reattach the layers of fabric together, underestimating that the sewing machine of course would make it too hard to do by machine- by hand. Then the edges wouldn’t meet up evenly. Anyone else surprised I had a break for a delicious grilled cheese and garlic sandwich and tea and then once done sewing and all tidied, I had an Epsom salts and lavender soak?

Good thing the whole sleeve still lines up and that the cords work and I could gather up the lower sleeve on the black fancy gown if I want to. I also inserted an extra hidden long lace sleeve from the sleeve cap.

I had some black velvet ribbon left over. I stitched a regular strip of black ribbon to the remnant of the velvet ribbon as well as on the regular ribbon, I stitched on a strip of the black lace seam binding. I stitched all that together than stitched it to the dress. The idea is that it looks like it has detail, it is a witch gown after all. Then with the ends I seam ripped the bodice on the sides, tucked in the ends of the ribbon, then slip stitched it closed again and on the wrong side of the gown, I trimmed the ribbon ends.

I stitched the wide black velvet on the collar to make the collar appear like the velvet overlaps the whole upper area. They did that on the Arwen gown and I finally figured out the trick to that. The black velvet ribbon is the same colour as the body of the dress. The actual collar is a lighter blackish grey colour, the same lace as on the sleeve caps. So the black velvet ribbon contrasts with the collar lace.

I want a tailor to do the hem though. I never needed to add a zipper to the gown because the knit material is so swishy. But the downside of that is that the material was too swishy in the sewing machine. It is hemmed but a tailor would have more control over that.

The dress shown below is the initial inspiration for my dress:

GOWN!!

Sewing needles snapped, threads littered table and floors, patience expired and sanity was tested. But at last, the hard work is done. The gown looks beautiful.

Simplicity no longer sends patterns to Canada. I have the pattern and while I won’t make that pattern again. I have stored it away carefully. After all, you never know when you will be bit by the sewing bug and be your own fairy godmother and want to sew a witchy gown!!!!!!!!!!

Wise words

WaxWane_Paperback

Merry meet all,

I am proud to be published in the anthology Wax and Wane: A Gathering of Witch Tales published by Nosetouch Press. The extra reason is that the editor is sensitive to Witches today.

“I would qualify it by saying that just as there are good and bad people and those in-between, so we had witch stories that reflected that balance — mostly good or grey, and a few wicked ones. We rejected stories that ran with the green-faced, baby-killing hag witch stereotype.”

That is one more reason to be happy to be published. It’s rare that an editor or other person shows so much understanding and kindness. Witches will want to read this book because of the understanding shown by the editors. This is rare. I can’t wait to hold the book in my hands and read it from cover to cover. I get a contributor copy. Oh I can’t wait. The book cover is beautiful.

If you are interested in pre ordering the book, here is the link:

http://www.amazon.com/Wax-Wane-Gathering-Witch-Tales/dp/1944286039

I also got an Amazon Author Page after I signed the contract. Here is the link to the page:

http://www.amazon.com/Heddy-Johannesen/e/B01A2TMCPO/ref=dp_byline_cont_book_19

I have good reason to be excited. Due to the nice editor’s kind comments, I have been firing potential book reviewer after book reviewer and place to carry the book after another that I can think of. I don’t mind helping David Neal. I know a lot of contacts in the Witch world so I am able to help that way. Witches and Pagans magazine might feature a review of the book and possibly Eternal Haunted Summer Ezine might review the book too.

My article on Chalices that was originally printed in Circle Magazine will be published in Eternal Haunted Summer Ezine for the spring issue. I am also hard at work on my other writing.Witches and Pagans published my poem, “Over a Blood Moon” in their most recent issue.

The Wax and Wane anthology is scheduled to be released on March 2, 2016. It’s not far away. The spring equinox occurs in March too. Good reason to celebrate!

Blessings, Lady Spiderwitch )O(

Halloween Haunts: Tradition by Heddy Johannesen

The ancient Celts celebrated the Sabbat of Samhain on the eve of October 31st, marking the Celtic New Year. Samhain means summer’s end, pronounced “samhuinn” (Scots Gaelic spelling) when they protected their herds in the stables and stored their harvest for the cold winter. They feasted, burned need-fires, and divined with the spirits of those […]

Divine Divinations

eerie-moon.jpg

Merry meet all,

Necromantic Divination

Necromantic Divination can be an awesome way to connect to your loved ones. I hesitate to use the word ‘ancestors’ because it has such an implication of ancient ancestors. That’s not what I am talking about here. I mean the ones who have passed on who were close to you in life, even pets. I have photos of my deceased pets on my altar. I also have a photo of my grandfather on my altar. It is always there, next to the racoon skull. This is what feels right for me. I have left offerings and prayed to them.

So now that you may have a general idea of who to call on, the next point is when to call on them. Well the easy answer is when you meditate at your altar, are in a ritual, and to try to do it everyday. This is to keep up a relationship with them. They want to be heard, acknowledged. The love they felt for you doesn’t cease because they are dead. It still exists.

THE COLOR BLACK

I am still in favour of purple or deep blue. I wear purple a lot and black even more so. I have to take Wednesday Addam’s side on this one. I get gawked at when I wear my goth velvet gown but who cares? Let them stare. I bask in it. Why should I hide an aspect of myself to look like every other Walmart customer? Perish the thought. Spirits are attracted to those who stand out from the crowd. Black attracts spirits. Black is slinky and mysterious, looks cool, and can make you look more intelligent. Just watch a black cat some time. Watch her slink and prowl, strut and groom herself. But black draws energy in. When you want to pull energy towards you, it makes sense to utilize best what would make that happen.

Conversely, white draws energy away from you. When I had to perform a serious banishing/ cleansing of my hone, I used white candles. The white light draws the energy away. Black draws it in. Deep blue or purple are also good for psychic work, I like to think that you can start a ritual/ spell with a black candle and keep it burning, but if you want to get deep into psychic work (use candles that have been dedicated to the tasks), use the deep blue or purple candles. But a black candle will help draw spirits to you for a seance or skull dedication ritual.

The colour of the candle is crucial and so is the type or shape and size of the candle. Larger candles leave you with more time to do your psychic work. Taper candles should be allowed to burn within a safe vessel. Put a long candle in a hurricane glass. Do use safety when burning candles Keep in mind its not cool to be evicted during cold weather season and suddenly searching for a new apartment because your candle burned the place down.

A black altar cloth, with a silver pentacle, silver or bronze athame, and glass candleholders can look so magical. But bronze daggers don’t scare off spirits. Silver and iron turns off spirits. That is just something to keep in mind. Fairies hate iron!! Just ask Maleficient.

I personally would find a bronze dagger to be hard to find here, unless I order it online. Most daggers or athames and even bolines though are silver. Not many people are aware that bronze athames attract spirits. If you want to hold a seance or other similar type of divination session, then do try to acquire a bronze athame or use a wooden wand. Wooden wands would not scare them off.

Consider the moon phase and planetary rulers when performing your magick too. The waxing to full moon is an ideal time. The waning moon can be for cleansing your home of unwanted negative energies. The dead are around all the time. They are dead, they face eternity. They can be called on anytime. Just make sure that when you call on them, you have something serious to request of them or to make an offering of honey, beans, herbs, or wine, etc. Be solemn and respectful. They will be the same way to you. Never diss the dead. Showing respect ensures a harmonious relationship with them. They can inflict some damage on you if you diss them. They don’t share our reality or rules. Trust me on this.

With all these pointers, you are well on your way to a successful divination session. Enjoy!

Blessings, Lady Spiderwitch

Autumn Equinox

CIMG2561

Merry meet all,

Today the sun is shining strong. The outdoors coax me. I may just venture out to the garden again to see what goodies I can harvest for my feast tonight. I have invited my Mom over for dinner. We shall enjoy homemade fresh pumpkin soup, roasted seeds, and lovely bread. I have no wine nor any cash but hey even paupers can enjoy homemade soft mead.

The air is crisp. I transplanted heliopsis and some other flowers that look like sunflowers in my garden. I want lots of flowers. Next summer, they will bloom. Someone offered to send me seeds! I have been harvesting Chinese lanterns and tomatoes from my garden. I am a bit disappointed with the scarcity of the harvest this year. I expected much more. I blame slugs and other pests.

The autumn equinox issue of Eternal Haunted Summer Ezine is posted!! Here is the link:http://eternalhauntedsummer.com/issues/autumn-equinox-2015/

Enjoy the autumn season.

Blessings, Lady Spiderwitch
